This book provides an excellent summary of the author's experiences with and lessons learned from the microservice architecture. As a member of a team which is implementing a microservice architecture for the first time, this book has been invaluable. Time will tell if the guidance is correct on all fronts, but so far it has helped us make some important decisions. Whether you decide to conform to his recommendations or not, this book will help you understand the decision points and give you some knowledge upon which to make an intelligent decision. I would definitely recommend buying this book if you're making a foray into the microservice architecture.

The Tao of Microservices is an informative and entertaining primer on not only the how, but also the why of modern system design with microservices. The author shares his experience using microservices and guides the reader in best practices from lessons learned. I learned a lot from this book and highly recommend it to anyone moving into the world of large scale systems design.

When you hear the term microservices, do you associate it with messages, queues, and pub/sub? If not, the first few chapters alone might be worth the price of admission. This book will help you understand the motivations behind the architectural style, as well as important implementation patterns. I purchased the kindle version for my iPad/ iPhone. I needed the information in the ICU.The author does a great job in explaining difficult respiratory physiology in a organized way.I use this book on a daily basis. Even better as a kindle format, no ,ore heavy books to shove in my pocket!

Used this during my intern year for ICU. HIGHLY recommend this book. It makes ventilation quite easy. Goes over most common vent settings, allowing you to advance after you have the basics. This is all you really need for vents. Quick read, short chapters, easy to understand. Don't think twice and get this book!!!

I don't think I can finish this book. It caught my eye in the Christian bookstore and since I recently lost my dog, I thought it might be helpful. What I am finding is very little about his dog and more long preachy paragraphs about things that just seem to randomly come to his mind. Many long bible quotes and he seems to go off on tangents. Something I found rather objectionable was his first dog, Charlie, I believe his name was, was left to be put down by his wife while he was out of town. I skipped thru to the chapter titled "Good-bye", and I see once again, he said he knew Hannah was dying and he'd never see her again, but what did he do? He left town again for work, left his dog to die without him. I really can't get past that. He put work before the dog he claims meant so much to him.I tried to pick this book up and continue reading but it's just more preaching of his random thoughts. I feel like his dog is an afterthought, like he's trying to fit her life into an already perceived notion of a book and he needed her to make it sound legitimate, because who wants a book full of his random preachy thoughts.......no one.

I’m often suspicious of biographies. Most of the time I wonder how well the author got to know the subject of the biography. Did they get to interview the subject personally? Was the subject completely honest with the biographer? Does the biographer have an agenda or viewpoint that contradicts with the real story?I don’t have any of those concerns regarding Dave Burchett’s new book, Stay: Lessons My Dogs Taught Me About Life, Loss, and Grace. Though Dave is writing about Hannah, and later Maggie, he’s telling their story from his perspective – that of a best friend. Because Hannah and Maggie are man’s best friend – dogs. Dave has written what I think is the best biography of an animal as told from a human viewpoint that I’ve ever read.I’ve not stopped thinking about what the vet said after giving Dave the emotional news of a terminal diagnosis for this beloved furry friend. The doctor explained that Hannah didn’t know she had cancer and would live each remaining day with all the life she had in her. “Dogs have no fear of death, so they live in the moment. Enjoy each moment that you have.” What began Dave’s journey of observing and learning from Hannah has the potential to shake you to the core of how you live life. The lessons he learned along the way are for all of us.The freedom and grace Dave discovered through the months that remained for Hannah will shatter your view of rules, legalistic morality, anger, and even death. It’s not a fun story. I knew what was going to happened to Hannah, yet I still cried as Dave recounted the end of Hannah’s life.Initially that was the end of the book. But, in the way that God always gets the last laugh, there would be more to the story. Maggie. A new rescue dog. An opportunity for Dave to teach someone else the lessons of forgiveness and joy he had learned from Hannah. Could a dog eager to destroy some good furniture and quick to hide in shame learn about unconditional love? Could a wild animal discover freedom on a leash?This is a book of humor, faith, the path of loss, and the journey of rediscovering joy. I never learned those lessons from the fish, lizards, and hermit crabs we had as pets. It’s only been with dogs that I’ve experienced those same lessons. Dogs have something to teach us. It may even be why God created them in the first place. Dave knows that and uses his own experiences to get us closer to the heart of God.I suspect at the end of this year I’ll be saying STAY was my favorite book of the year. I highly recommend you get a copy and read it soon. This is a book dog lovers – all animal lovers. It is a book I think every Christian should read – and those who are on the journey of seeking God. It’s also a book for everyone who just loves to read.I suspect Dave’s words will become your own if you read STAY. “Hannah’s journey has changed me. I am more aware of living fully in each moment. I try to live in the freedom of God’s grace. I am accepting with gratitude what each day brings me. I try to find joy even when I don’t feel at my best. Hannah’s graceful and uncomplaining acceptance of pain, and ultimately death, challenges me to become bolder than I have ever been.”

*spoilers**Dave Burchett, leads us on a story of goodness and grace through the life he leads with his dogs, but mostly with his best life friend, Hannah, a golden retriever, the dog his family had during one of the lowest times of their life.When Burchett’s wife was diagnosed with cancer, he started a journal. The book is written from the first person, and as journal entries I loved that about the book. This book was fantastic.During Joni’s cancer treatments, Hannah stayed by their side and seems to “read” her owners behaviors and their love. Giving them some comfort and peace during each treatment and after her surgery. Then sweet Hannah was diagnosed with cancer.They chose a course of treatment that would only make Hannah comfortable and keep her out of pain.During those next few months they saw a lifetime of love, and grace in the way that Hannah lived her life. Putting their needs first. Hannah lived in the moment and was free. One of the best quotes in the book was when the vet told them this “dogs don’t fear death, they live in the moment”After Hannah’s illness took her, Dave thought he would never be able to love again, however, when he saw sweet Savannah’s face, he fell in love.When they brought Savannah home, they knew that her name was too close to Hannah’s so they eventually changed her name to Maggie. In doing so they learned that Maggie, didn’t really realize her name well. When they enrolled Maggie in obedience class, they learned the things she needed. In doing so they learned Maggie needed a leader, someone to take her and tell her yes, no, sit, stay, the commands in every dog’s life, as well as teach her to walk on a leash and guide.Dave took each lesson that he learned and related it back to the Bible with a timely Bible verse, or story from the Bible and this book became a lesson, literally on grace, and humility. Love, loss and learning.Learning from your dog is a very gracious thing because of what they can teach you. Best book on bio capitalism to date.

It's hard to convey, I think, just how much of a blockbuster book of sociology and modern political economy this is, especially given the nebulous constellation of heavy-hitting themes which mark its title - Life, Capitalism, Biotechnology. A book about all of these things, yes; but, crucially, one entirely rooted in the concrete soil of historical and sociological analysis that so often goes missing from titles like these. Shifting between the pharmaceutical dimensions of the South African AIDS crisis, the development of recombinant DNA tech (think cloning) and stem cell research in the US, as well as the tracking of global financial flows and evolving international security concerns, Cooper brings all these topics and more together in one of the most eye-opening reads I've embarked upon in a long time.More than just a mishmash of loosely-connected motifs, at its core lies the central insight upon which 'Life as Surplus' turns: that in biotechnology, the so-called 'debt-form' of capitalism finds its perfect instantiation. Here's what this means: the peculiar thing about debt is its ability to generate wealth though nothing other than the very promise of its repayment: so long as debt is owed, interest must be payed. As Marx pointed out and Cooper reminds us, this is nothing other than the high point of capitalist 'delirium', the point at which "capital begins to imagine itself as self-valorising value: a life-form possessed of its own powers of self-generation". And of this, Cooper will simply ask: what of the 'life-form' itself that capital is said to mirror in its debt-form? Do recent advances in biotechnology not themselves transform 'life itself' into a self-generating source of value as well, insofar as life is just that which can re-produce itself?For Cooper, the answer here is an unequivocal yes, and in such a way that both biotechnology and capitalism merge in their drive to "situate the locus of wealth creation in the pure debt form - the regeneration of money from money and life from life, without final redemption". It's a fascinating thesis, and one explored through an engagement with both the actual technologies involved (the discussion of bioreactors and self-regenerating stem-cell lines is one of the absolute highlights of this book) and the capitalist dynamics that drive their uptake and proliferation. As much a study of modern capitalism as it is of biotechnology then, 'Life as Surplus' thinks the two together in ways that render each inseparable and our understanding richer for it. I particularly appreciated Cooper's insistence that, far from just being another sop about the commercialization of 'life', at stake here is the *kind* of commercialization at work, a promissory and future-orientated one, one whose specific contours make all the difference.Indeed, it's largely the analysis of the specific temporalities at work in both capitalism and biotechnology that makes this work so gripping, with its focus on the twinned notions of debt and promise providing a new lens through which to approach nothing less than the much-discussed field of 'biopolitics'. Readers familiar with the philosophical work of Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, and Roberto Espositio in particular will appreciate the novel perspectives and subtle correctives offered within as well, especially given the sociologically and even technologically informed discussions which underpin the few flights into 'theory' that Cooper occasionally risks. While the hype and public prominence of biotech has somewhat waned in the 10 years since this book's publication (displaced, perhaps, by its as-yet unfulfilled promises and the rise of 'big data'), one wonders if the quiet is simply a calm before a resurgent storm whose rumblings are nowhere better set out than this sensational study.

Insightful, innovative, highly readable, though at times dense. Cooper provides a novel analysis of the encounter between neoliberal innovation economies, biotechnology and the religious right. The strength of the book lies in its theoretical rigour and historical detail. It also advances some provocative ideas about the nature of neoliberal economics, namely that its long-term success is fed by its own regulation/deregulation dynamics.

A prescient & insightful contribution not only to Science & Technology Studies, but to broader dialogues about biopolitics, markets, capitalism and environmentalism. I find myself recommending this book to many people whose interests and scholarship cross a wide spectrum. I can't wait for her next book.
