Great information with lots of detailed pictures. A must if you want to learn the details and values of antique American frames.

I bought this book hoping to get some real specific information on buying and selling antique american frames. I enjoyed reading this book because it gave me a bigger picture of how the frame styles developed in America (even though I also felt like Mr. Wilner's chatty tone seemed to talk down to his audience). I agree with some of the other reviewers in that this certainly is an enthusiastic book and creates awareness for people to look at what surrounds the picture instead of just looking at the painting. Antique frames should certainly be studied and written about and noticed and matched with the right paintings. I do have some complaints however. I am an antiques dealer and I have some other books in the Confident Collector series. I really don't think this book fits in the same spirit as the rest of the series. I think Mr. Wilner's prices are all off base with the real world of antiques and collecting. They seem to be a self-serving guide to prices in his shop alone. I go to lots of auctions and antique markets in many states and have been in the business for many years of selling both paintings and frames and I rarely have seen frames alone sell for the kind of values he is giving them. I know that prices are going up since more awareness has made people appreciate the so-called art of the frame more. I have seen that there are many exhibits and articles on antique frames in the last few years, and I have seen that frames are starting to cost more as people become more aware that frames can be as important as a painting.I know that people like Mr. Wilner are benefiting the public by educating them on what a good frame is. I agree that some frames are very valuable, like an original Stanford White or a signed artists frame (as described in the book), but it seems that Mr. Wilner's book attempts to make all American frames seem valuable and that just can't be true. It's not true of American furniture or other antiques, they all have highs and lows, so frames must too. Like for example simple black Eastlake print frames in his book are starting at $2500, but those kinds of frames can be found at nearly every antiques mall for well under $500. There is no indication in the text about why Mr. Wilner finds Eastlake frames are suddenly so valuable other than that he says so. Also Mr. Wilner's book seems to be the only one in the series that he is the only dealer listed. Other books list other experts and sources to buy or find out more about the specific antique. Overall, I think that for people who know nothing about frames and want some idea of what they are about and to learn some general history, the chapter text is quite informative but the dates of the frames shown are not in chronological order which is somewhat confusing. Unfortunately the black and white pictures are so small and fuzzy and such bad quality that it is very difficult to see the detail in the frames, so how can you tell if you have one of the valuable ones or not? The photo captions themselves don't really give much extra information I wish they talked more about the decorative motifs or described the frames better since the photos are so bad. As generalist antique guides go it's a decent overview. I would just tell anyone to take the Price Guide part of this with a very large grain of salt, since the frame prices seem to be on the moon instead of in the real world of american antiques.

It struck me as odd that people were tossing these things of craftsmanship and age simply because they didn't think they could profit in a monetary sense. It was the death and destruction of antique frames that has made them rare. So many died, so so many could live. I am sure marketing was the key factor in showing the buyer with the bucks the joy and appreciation of the vintage frames beauty. And so to Mr. Eli Wilner belong the spoils. I found the book enlightening and enriching. Dealers who trade in these wares should buy numerous copies and send them out to their customers for the holidays.

Very informative and frames arebeautiful . I wish i had this information 20-30 years ago. Would love for Eli to do a book on more common frames .

I started with the e-book and read more than half of it in one night. So I bought the hard copy and finished it quickly. I absolutely love how this allergy mom takes us through her family's journey from birth to desensitized. It inspired me to document our journey, well, too. Because who knows what the future holds! The desensitizing story was very inspiring as we begin our oral immunotherapy soon. Even though it's not the same exact therapy this family chose, the desensitizing factor is the same. And I gleaned many good ideas for helping make OIT as smooth as possible, much to do with mental and emotional health. Thank you, Holli, for taking the time and work to open your world up to us. We thank you much!!!

Even though my children and I do not have any food allergies, I recommend this book to anyone who interacts with kids. Holli's book made me much more food allergy aware, and gave me a new sense of empathy for food allergic kids and their parents. Holli teaches her reader about the integrative health approach (super interesting), and the way Holli tells her daughter Rachel's story makes this a quick read. I've been telling all of my friends with food allergic kids that there is another option besides strict avoidance and encouraging them to read Holli's testimony. Holli shares from her heart about the ups and downs of raising a food allergic child, how she listened to her gut and did her own research, and the success that desensitization (under the direction of a food allergy coach) has offered Rachel.

From Anaphylaxis to Buttercream is an amazing story. The author does an incredible job of bringing the reader with her on her daughter's 12 year journey to reduce life threatening reactions to foods Rachel was experiencing from babyhood. Holli's commitment as a parent and then her decision to pursue health coaching to support others is extraordinary. Inspiring, informative and unbelievably uplifting to those of us experiencing difficulty eating meals that many fortunately take for granted. Thanks for sharing and enlightening so that the rest of us can aspire to live a peaceful, healthy, stress free life...

This book is a well-written and engaging journey of a family struggling to find solutions to their child’s life-threatening allergies. It showcases the perseverance of parents searching for ways to keep their child safe when the standard practice of avoidance fails. This book is truly a triumph; in their journey to find answers and solutions, and in their being able to resolve their child’s allergies so that she can now eat the foods which were such a threat, and live her life without fear! I am a mom who has had my own journey and experimentation with mixing different medical philosophies as well as food choices to address my own health issues. I heartily recommend this book to parents and anyone in search of ways to improve the health of their loved ones.

This is a chronicle of Holli Bassin's personal journey in first helping identify what her daughter was allergic to, then in how she learned how to keep her daughter safe from her allergens, and finally how she helped her daughter overcome her allergies. As another parent with children with allergies, I found this story very relatable and honest, but also encouraging and inspiring. I like how the author didn't shy away from pointing out the mistakes she made (which struck a chord since I've made similar mistakes), and since it is written based on the author's journal entries, it feels like we learn along with Holli. And her daughter is one example that allergies can be cured! (Although I also appreciate that Holli makes a point to say that each child is different.) I feel like I have some new avenues to explore, and closed the book feeling re-motivated and better equipped to approach my own daughters' allergies in a new way.

This is a very compelling story of how Holli Bassin helped her daughter overcome life-threatening allergies to food such as eggs, milk, dairy and mustard. The author documents in precise detail, day by day, hour by hour, many accounts of the reactions her daughter had to various foods as they progressed through the desensitization process. I have to applaud Holli Bassin for her courage, patience, love and dedication. I love the way the story ends, as she expresses her happy and heartwarming sentiments and she watches her daughter grow up into a confident eater who outgrew her allergies and thrived in her environment. Any parent who has a child with life threatening food allergies could benefit from reading this book.

What a marvelously helpful and inspiring book for anyone who suffers food allergies. Mothers especially will find Rachel’s food diary a real eye opener! A really fun read, appropriate for all ages because I believe there is something in this book that will resonate with just about anyone. The author shares painful stories with wit and good humor. There were a number of laugh-out-loud moments for me. However, the lessons in the book are quite serious. It was a hard book to put down.

Good book. Great story! Fun to read. Insightful. Purchased it for my teen as required summer reading. Double bang for the buck as whether your a teen or beyond, it's a good read!

This book is marked as an "Amazon Best Seller!" It's the #1 best selling book on Amazon in its category, which is "Books > Teens > Personal Health > Physical Impairments." I don't know how many books there ARE in that category, but I'm guessing not a lot. And that really explains what I liked and didn't like about this book.This young man survived a horrifying bout of childhood cancer which resulted in one of his legs being amputated at the hip. As he explains, this is a severe physical impairment because no prosthetic device ever invented can replace the actions of three joints. Eventually the problem solved itself because his body rejected the prosthesis and he's now limited to crutches.I think the author intended his story to be both entertaining and educational and I think he succeeds. This book forces the reader to examine America's strange attitude toward the physically handicapped. On the one hand, we don't see being physically handicapped as a GOOD thing. We certainly wouldn't want to be physically handicapped ourselves or for any of our loved ones to be physically handicapped. On the other hand, we don't want to look shallow and unsympathetic.We compromise by elevating the handicapped to the status of semi-sainthood. A handicapped person is automatically a "hero" because he/she has a handicap and keeps going. (Like they have a choice?) We like to hear from the handicapped and we like to pat them on the back because it makes us feel good about ourselves. We love that we don't have to feel sorry for them because they're brave and unselfish and plucky and all the stuff that the rest of us aren't and don't want to be. Attending their motivational speeches and cheering loudly solves the problem of our ambivalent attitudes toward the "differently-abled." Then we can forget about them. We're off the hook.This intelligent, articulate young man keeps making the point that the loss of a limb doesn't really make you fundamentally any different from everyone else. And he's absolutely correct and his approach to women proves it. His love life (or lack of one) has little to do with his missing leg and everything to do with being raised by two loving, earnest, well-meaning people whose child-rearing methods left him ill-equipped to function in the modern world. In a culture where youngsters hook-up and hope that sex will lead to romance, he's feeling guilty for THINKING about kissing a girl. He's looking for a 1950's girl and he's 60 years too late.This book is quirky and some shy teens may relate to his stories of awkward attempts to find romance. Most of his stories are run-of-the-mill tales of growing up. However, the story about the time when the foot of his prosthesis turned backwards was unique. I have to admit, I never read anything quite like that one before. And he tells his stories very well.The take-away lesson is: Stop burdening this man by expecting him to be a super-hero. Stop gushing because he made a speech with jokes and he only has ONE LEG! Stop being amazed because he wrote a book and he only has ONE LEG! Do you see how silly you sound?He's a normal, shallow, self-centered young guy and he wants what every other normal, shallow, self-centered young guy wants - a babe. That's what he goes after and he's not settling for less. Hence his reaction to "Stella the Stalker."Finally a girl is interested in him. Maybe a bit TOO interested, but interested. And he tells her to get lost. He freely admits that Stella's sin is not that she's weird, but that she's ugly. If she had been one of the hot babes he covets, her stalking would have been delightful.Finally he meets a beauty queen who was also home-schooled and they walk off into the sunset. Stella wasn't his problem and I'm not unreasonable enough to think he could have made a huge difference in her life. He could have shown her some kindness, but maybe that's expecting too much of a young man. Anyway, he didn't.Just because something extraordinary (good or bad) has happened to you doesn't mean that you become an extraordinary person. You have to do that yourself. Maybe the author and his beauty queen girlfriend will marry. Maybe one of their children will be a Stella. Maybe loving an imperfect child and advocating for her and hurting when she hurts will turn him into the hero that his audiences want to believe he is now.This is a teen book and a teen would react to it far differently than I did. Still, I'm glad I read it. I didn't fall in love with the guy, but he made me think.

Self-deprecating and honest, yet giggle-out-loud (embarrassingly, at a coffee shop, in front of other people) funny, this is a very relatable book addressing the perils of dating. I highly recommend it.

I bought this book which was required reading for my 9th grade triplets and they all said it was a great book.

Elloren remains at the University in Verpax, still sheltering Marina, a rescued Selkie, and rooming with her friends, Diana, a Lupine, and Wynter, and Ariel, who are Icarals. She still resists being wandfasted to Lukas Grey. And she is still drawn to the mysterious Yvan Guriel, who she's beginning to think is hiding more than she previously realized. Her affinity lines continue to strengthen and her feel for power moves beyond just earth and fire. While her friend Amaz friend, Andras, and Ariel try to heal the rescued military dragon Naga, and Elloren ponders how to help her friend Tierney escape Council-mandated wandfasting and iron-testing, the unthinkable happens. Overnight, Marcus Vogel becomes High Mage on the Gardnerian Council and events are set into motion that will change Erthia forever. If you thought the sexism, racism, and hatred were bad before, you haven't seen anything yet. Pogroms, genocide, and other atrocities begin to occur, all with the horrifying support of Elloren, Rafe and Trystan's despicable Aunt Vyvian. Most importantly, the Shadow Wand appears at last. Its bearer comes as no surprise.Against this backdrop of terror, with Mage Council Rulings one after another, each viler than the last, the Gardnerian Mage Council is poised to pass Vyvian's edict that would result in the execution of all Selkies. Meanwhile, Elloren is shocked to find that Marina is learning to speak the Common Tongue and has quite a lot to say. Elloren also finds out that her childhood friend Gareth has Selkie heritage, and that even in a university town like Verpax there is a terrible sex-trafficking trade in Selkies. Someone needs to help the Selkies but that would mean returning them to the ocean with their skins. Marina needs the help of Elloren and her friends to rescue the captive Selkies but how on Erthia is the task to be accomplished? It's going to require far more power than this group of student dissidents has at their disposal.To try to find aid, Elloren is willing to risk leaving Verpacia in order to seek assistance for the Selkies in neighboring realms who are harboring other threatened groups like the Urisks, Fae, Kelts, and Smaragdalfen. While in Amaz she encounters her friend Sage, the Light Mage who gave her the White Wand, and who broke her wandfasting vows. Sage is hard at work trying to break the wandfasting spell that keeps her in constant pain, dulled to bearable levels by Amazian rune magic. (A point I can already see is going to be vitally important to Gardnerian women's future. I can think of more than a few wandfastings that need to be broken ASAP.) Elloren ponders yet again what role she can play in opposing Vogel. As the action ramps up, she finds herself having to make the hard choice to appear more Gardnerian in order to best help her friends. That path is fraught with danger since she looks so much like her infamous grandmother, the Black Witch, but appears to have none of the actual power of Carnissa Gardner to safeguard herself. Elloren is equal to the task as she begins to fight for everything she believes in. There are sorrows and losses in this book, but they only strengthen Elloren's resolve.While I enjoyed this second book, I did feel that some of the plot points were less smoothly handled. There were plenty of further daring adventures with the varied band of friends. (Elloren's journeys, especially to Amaz, were fascinating. Forest's world building is just terrific. Even her choice of names provides delight.) There was also genuine horror. But I was less enamored of the love interest dynamic in this book and thought that if Elloren and her paramour said just one more time that they couldn't, shouldn't be together I was going to pass out from all the eye-rolling I was doing. We all knew how this was going to go and a good hundred plus pages of "we shouldn't, oops! we can't, oops!" was getting mighty old by the end. Also, the two big reveals of the book come in such short order, in the last twenty pages of the book, and at least one of them just felt unrealistic, since if Elloren saw him so unguarded, anyone could have? The other, well... if you haven't been expecting that since the beginning of the first book, you haven't been paying attention. I guess I was just expecting something with a bit more gravitas and I'm still wondering how it never happened before (because spoilers).Many things are still unresolved, not least of which is what Jules and Lucretia aren't telling Elloren about the fate of her parents. They clearly know something that Elloren and her brothers don't. And I have a few other questions, especially about that famous prophecy. Don't you ever wonder why the prophecy doesn't say anything about the White Wand and the Shadow Wand? I do. I want to read original prophecy and know more about who prophesied it. Because if history is written by the victors, it seems like prophecies are subject to the same kind of bias.The Black Witch Chronicles continues to be a series that encourages young people to learn as much as they can about everything and everyone they can and to fight for what is right, while being pragmatic enough to know when they'll need help doing so."The Wand knows you have her power in your blood. Required textbook for CNA course my child is taking. Her opinion is that it's well laid out, includes color photos for reference and has an adequate table of contents to assist with navigating. She's only had the book for one week but claims she's learning a lot. Also, excellent shipping time. Received the book four days earlier than projected. A major bonus when working on a deadline before course starts.

I was worried about getting a used book. The book was basically brand new. I would definitely recommend it. Only thing I can this of someone having a problem is, some areas was highlighted but again I knew it was used, and for me that was a plus. The person that had the book before took really good noted.

This is helping me a lot with studying, only problem I’ve had with it is the chapters don’t match they are at least one chapter behind some even more. When you click on chapter 4 it’s really Chapter 3.

I needed this for my course back in January. The first place I come to look was there and the price was really reasonable.

In my 63 years on this planet I have read practically everything there was to read about this enigmatic couple, particularly Wallis. The author presents her with a fresh outlook I found fascinating. It was a joy to read and kept my attention throughout. The author delved into different theories trying to explain, once again, how these two wildly separate people came to be inseparably entwined together, changing history with their meeting. I like the way the author kept the spotlight strictly on Wallis; her letters, physical appearance, jewelry, love of couture and diet was extremely interesting. She even brought out new insights into some well known facts about their lives and travails. The author does not sugar coat Wallis but also describes how her years of exile and rejection by Edward's family took their toll.I really found nothing negative to complain about. I found several of the author's theories very intriguing but even she stated that no one will ever no the real truth behind their attraction to each other. Maybe the book won't be taught in college but I found it to be a delightful read and well worth it.

Quite readable, but it is obvious throughout that the author wants to 'rehabilitate' Wallis Simpson, at least to the extent that people feel sympathy for her. I would rather have had a bit more evidence and less interpretation (especially the psychological speculations which at times seem to come out of nowhere). However,since actual evidence (diaries, letters, etc) is significantly lacking or not easily accessible, I suppose it is to be expected. Personally, I think a companion volume called The Man Who Never Wanted To Be King (But Always Wanted His Own Way) would go along way toward filling out the complete picture of a bizarre event in British history.

I was expecting lots more from this biography of Wallis Simpson, but aside from quoting from some of Wallis's more recently-discovered letters, Sebba does little but rehash the old familiar stories. The book focuses on the lead-up to the abdication crisis, with barely a nod to Wallis and Edward's post-abdication, post-Bahamas years. Sebba recounts in detail many of the salacious rumors about Wallis only to acknowledge reluctantly that they can't be proven. Wallis comes across as a hollow woman, but one who deserves better treatment at the hands of a biographer.

This was such an interesting book. I've read a little bit about Wallace Simpson, curious about her. Nothing that gave the background I found in this book. It genuinely helped to gain a measure of understanding. The part I found most impressive was that the information didn't feel biased. Facts were presented and a very readable and interesting history told. This was a person who had issues from her youth that she never gained perspective on. Those issues were her guiding force. What a shame she allowed herself to become the woman she did. Had she been able to channel her drive in some positive other way, whatever she chose she would have mastered. She chose to try to climb socially by using the men in her life, always seeking the next best financially secure situation she she could find. She unwisely ended up in a web of her own creation.Originally I had chosen the book because of its title. Assuming it to be a book that would be slanted only toward the British feeling toward Wallace Simpson. There is certainly information here that shows British feeling toward her. That feeling derives from the information itself, not the authors editorializing. The book also shows American perspective. I was very impressed. It would have been so easy to create a book that simply pictured her as a gold digger. The time was taken to relate background information. To tell her history without editorially slanting it. Absolutely a biography worth reading!

I didn't like this at all; it is so poorly written, it is almost incoherent, and there is so much cheap speculation that it reads like a supermarket tabloid. If you are interested in history, this is not your book.

Anne is one of the first, if not the first, woman to tackle the complex woman that Wallis was and the equally complex world Wallis lived within. Her treatment of Wallis is done with class and elegance, just as Wallis would have required. That said, Anne has some interesting theories about Wallis that could in many ways explain Wallis' behavior around men as well as women. And you really, 'feel,' for Wallis at some points, especially when it came to the royal family's 'regard' for Wallis. If you like a compelling story, a glimpse into the rarefied world of pre and post WWII royalty, this is the book for you!

Interesting reading. Don't know how accurate it was when it came to some medical conclusions on the Dutchess. Since there are no medical evidence to back up any claims ... All they do is throw doubt on to the entire book. As a result, I enjoyed reading this book, as a fluff piece ... Nothing more. If you want an historical piece, there are other works ... This should not be your first choice.

I haven't even finished reading this yet but it was a gift so I suppose I'll get through it eventually. A more accurate title would be "Wallis Simpson. Rumors I've heard and things I'm guessing at". Some things that are presented as "facts" don't give a source. Sometimes the author brings up a point and then drops it. Example: Wallis wrote that she and Mary Kirk continued their friendship after boarding school but the author says that "in private" Mark Kirk said otherwise. Then she drops it. Many pages later (seemed like forever) we learn of a rocky time between them. Maybe this is Mary's version? Who knows? The author didn't say. Maybe in another 10 chapters she will. The writing is difficult. Many sentences are so long they don't keep the readers attention. The author poses the possibility that Wallis had a physical condition but has no proof of it. In spite of having no proof she's determined to convince her readers that it must be true. As I said, this book was a gift so I will try to get through it. Please wish me luck.

This is the very little known about, 3rd book of the legendary stock trader Nicolas Darvas who made $2.4 million dollars in the stock market in 18 months in the sixties bull market. His first two books are still in print and I strongly urge you buy, read and study both of them. I made a 20% return in one month following his principles during the 2007 bull market. All my best trades have been using his system. This book was written in 1976 after he had experienced a long bear market.This book introduces his Dar*Card, which is a chart of separate price boxes representing the range a stock was trading at in different time periods. The system is to buy a stock the 2nd time it breaks above a price range to a new high. (Preferably an all time high) but a 52 week high can also be used when a stock is recovering from a bear market. The stock also must have increased trading volume and be on a long term uptrend. Also the "Darvas" stock should be in a new cutting edge field where investors earnings expections are running very high for the future.Darvas did not invest in blue chip stocks or stocks that were to big to grow. He looked for stocks that could be the future big cap stock that would change the way we did things. He was interested primarly in price action and did not care as much about why a stock was going up only that it was making him money. His money management consisted of stop losses set at the top of the old price box that the stock broke out of. He also set buy-stops to buy stocks when the broke out of price boxes. He advised shorting stocks when they fell through the bottom of the established price range.Excellent book, buy it and read it if possible. It will pay you back in what ever you spend.

Great book so far about Darvas trading system. Only thing I’ve seen so far is that there is not enough illustrated charts which I prefer. But clearly shows what the author method is.

This is a follow-up work to Darvas' other books following the 1974-75 bear market. In it, he introduces the now-famous graphical representation of the Darvas Box. Prior offerings described his system for identifying support and resistance levels. The Box System was not new at the time, but it refined the method described in his prior books and provided a graphic representation. Because paper charting services are no longer used by most investors (having been replaced by the Internet), the "DarCard" has little direct relevance. It does help, however, to explain his system. To put the entire system together, one must read this book and his prior book, "Wall Street: The Other Las Vegas."In reading this book, I was also struck at the strong similarities between Darvas' system and Bill O'Neil's "How to Make Money in Stocks." O'Neil's system is more complicated, complete and up-to-date--Darvas' system may be easier to use in practice.

For me his first book was a little too abstract. But, with this second book he really brings his theory down to Earth. He explains his investing strategy in practical terms; spells them out. This book is easily worth the $10 I paid for it, and will likely aid me in earning much more than that. Thanks to the author for his kindness.

The first book , how I made 2 million is a classic and I reread it every few years. It has so many insights. This one is just a bit of a rehash. At this point Darvas was clearly frustrated by the 1970's stock market. I think you could learn more by just reading the first one again, it was a fun read nonetheless .

All trend following methods are predicated on identifying support and resistance, making an initial trade on a breakout from a technical level, protecting against false moves with a stop-loss and letting profits run until the price action dictates your exit. Darvas reduces this to a simple to follow "Box" approach. While perhaps less sophistical than models that consider volume, moving average cross-overs and other technical indicators, this is an elegant and easy to implement approach that should keep you in for the ride and allow you to avoid major market corrections...IF ONE CONSISTENTLY FOLLOWS HIS RULES. nice easy read, but nothing earth-shatteringly new here.
