I was a bit disappointed in this cookbook. There are a few good recipes, but there are several "recipes" that I wouldn't say are real recipes - for example, one "recipe" is to open a Trader Joe's pre-made dip, and serve it with veggies for dipping. I need a cookbook to tell me this?? I know that there are now several cook books on the market made specifically for ingredients from TJ's - I would recommend you keep looking rather than buying this book.

Where has this been my whole life and how have I just discovered it? I'm only giving it 4 stars since some of the recipes are very meat heavy and not too culturally diverse. However, it will become my staple go to for every day cooking.

I read the reviews before purchasing. Some said the recipes were simple. I guess those people are chefs because I wouldn’t have come up with ANY of these in my own! I LOVE the recipes, the pictures are very helpful to me and I can not wait to start cooking. Thank you, Bonnie Matthews, for sharing your knowledge and journey and for creating this beautiful book!

I enjoyed this book very much. It’s thoughtful, insightful, logical & very well written. The only points of critique I'd like to offer are the following:1) On page 123-124, the author writes, “Perhaps there are some events, though they’re hard to imagine, when a divinely produced violation of nature’s laws is more likely than human error or deception. It would be a close-minded scientist who would say that miracles are impossible in principle.” I’m very disappointed that he would say something like that.2) On page 126, he writes, “evolutionary geneticists now know that the human population could never have been as small as only two individuals (referring to Adam & Eve)—much less the eight who rode out the flood on Noah’s Ark.” It seems to me the sentence should’ve been constructed in reverse, as in, “evolutionary geneticists now know that the human population could never have been as small as the eight who rode out the flood on Noah’s Ark —much less only two individuals.”3) On page 153, “observing nature directly instead using revelation or scripture . . .” is missing “of” after “instead.”4) On page 163, he writes, “if we inhabit the only universe there is, we simply got lucky. . . In other words, in the bridge game of cosmology, we drew a nearly perfect hand—at least for carbon-based humanoid life.” Richard Dawkins also talks of us humans as being “lucky.” I simply don’t see being brought to this world as luck. I don’t see what’s so good about it. Life is difficult and full of pain, suffering, and struggle. I don’t understand why these scientists keep characterizing us as being lucky. Then, on page 164, he writes, “Rather than assuming that the world was created for humans, the more reasonable hypothesis is that humans evolved to adapt to the world they confronted. Add to that the number of predators, diseases, and parasites that faced our ancestors, and still afflict us today, and you can reasonably conclude that God hasn’t given us an especially comfortable home. Indeed, it seems that evolution has enabled us to barely hang on in a world determined to kill us.” This quote just confirms my opinion above.5) On page 163, he writes, “about 1024 planets—a trillion trillion, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 of them—in our observable universe.” The 1024 should instead be formatted or expressly stated as 10 to the power 24.6) On page 164, he writes, “our universe is almost completely inhospitable to any kind of life we know. Place a human at random somewhere in the universe, or even on a planet, and the chance that she’ll die within seconds is overwhelming.” Why would he choose to use the pronoun “she” in this sentence, instead of “he” or even “he/she”? I think it’s in poor taste.7) On page 260, he writes, “. . . I feel that religion is not only incompatible with science, but a roadblock to scientific progress, I am not proposing a robotic world governed by science.” The comma after the word “progress” should be a period instead.

Like many baby boomers, I was raised in an environment in which religion, God, Jesus, and church were paramount, often typical in southern families like mine. As the author cites in his book, as a child I was urged, directed, inundated and 'brainwashed' with a basic set of beliefs and life view which made religion a fundamental element in my life. As I grew older and moved away from home, pursued (and completed) a college education, began a career in engineering, and got married and had children, more by rote routine than innate beliefs I continued as a 'churchgoer'. However, my acquisition of knowledge and critical thinking and my observations of the world with its multitude of differing religions, all claiming their own beliefs as superior to the exclusion of other beliefs, and the terrible history of wars, torture, suffering, and hate engendered by these religions made me pause and begin to think logically. If God had created the world and all that was in it, and man in his own image, and had positive plans for humankind, and that achievement of those beneficial outcomes (i.e. heaven) was heavily dependent on our belief in Him, then why had he never, in any tangible, broadly believable way ever given us a shred of evidence upon which to base our belief? I experienced an epiphany; having never seen, experienced, or heard of a well-documented, well-corroborated event that provided evidence of a God, then there was none. As the author states, all "evidence" for the existence of God is based on isolated, uncorroborated, long ago writings, unsubstantiated claims of revelations, visions, and/or attributions of (scientifically verified and explainable) acts of nature or validated physical laws. All religious believers (and that's a vivid descriptive word) is based only on "Faith", meaning they may "know it to be true," but there is no empirical evidence to affirm that truth. While it is fundamentally difficult, given human nature, fear of death, and a consequent hope for an afterlife, to not believe in a theistic universe, the case (as well articulated by the author), makes it clear that, unlike science, our existence is purely the result of naturalistic and scientifically provable laws (or 'regularities') of the universe we live in. As he notes, this does nothing to diminish morality and goodness in the world, and in fact makes a strong argument for the beneficial outcomes through the ending of arbitrary religious dogma promoting hate, murder, withholding use of life-saving methods, and many other harmful doctrines. The book served to reinforce the conclusions that I had already reached through my own logical world view, and should serve as stimulating, enlightening, and perhaps required reading for many who question religion.

I've read and enjoyed Jerry Coyne's other book 'Why Evolution is True' and attended a few lectures by him, so this might be partially due to a preaching to the choir effect but... this was kind of a slog. I read and enjoy popular press science books and a lot of the big name atheists works fairly regularly but this took forever to get through more out of fatigue than anything. The book is divided into four (possibly five?) chapters which doesn't sound like a huge deal, but I can't help but think dividing the various sub-topics he covers into their own sections would have made it a more enjoyable read. It feels like he thought he had to cram as many thoughts as he could under broad categories instead of just dealing with each in their own unit an, for me, that made for kind of a ponderous experience. I've nothing to say about the content, I think it's well argued and well supported, but, again, not the most readable tome, and that's a shame since I know he can write. Why Evolution is True is really quite a good book, for example.If you're new to the argument he lays out, you may have a better experience than I did, but if this isn't your first time'round there isn't much you haven't seen to keep you focused or interested.

Coyne is mainly concerned about "theistic religion," by which he means religions (chiefly Abrahamic) based on the idea of a personal god who intervenes in human affairs. What he objects to is is not everything associated with religion, but specifically the readiness of people to believe without evidence, and to view such belief as a virtue. He recognizes that religion, broadly conceived, deserves study both for its psychological aspects and for its historical and artistic importance. But he cites evidence that the idea that we know what an intervening god wants can be destructive.

I'm in the process of building a 1/350 scale model of the Indy and found plenty of details that might otherwise have been missed.Equally split between the USS Portland and USS Indianapolis which, I believe, are the only two vessels in the Portland class of heavy cruisers.Photos are all black and white (as expected) and their quality is better than I would have imagined.

I actually love these stories and the author. But I hate that Random House Inc put 8 stories on 5 CDs. Soooo annoying! try to have your kids listen to a full story, and then 3 chapters from a second story and then ask you to change the CD. then the next disc is two halves of 2 different stories, its just terrible. Even worse, I tried to rip the CDs and put them on the ipod, but the formatting is all off. All of the chapters are mislabled as are the stories and the CD numbers. I'll never look at Random House the same again, so dissapointed in them. We have four sets of these stories, but I refuse to ever buy another thing from Random House

I listened to part of the story with my 4yr old nephew. It did not hold his interest and I found it a bit irritating. I know these are very popular childrens' books, so maybe the paper version will be better when he learns to read. And perhaps he's too young for the content of these stories, but even if he were older I don't think I could sit through this listening with him.

My kids and I love the Magic Tree House books! I can't give this audio book 5 stars, though, because of how Random House formatted the books on CDs. Rather than giving one CD per book, the 8 books are spread across 5 CDs. When my kids are listening to a book at bedtime, I don't want them to have to get up and change CDs halfway through a book, let alone try to find the start of a book in the middle of a CD. I wish Random house had spent the tiny bit of extra money to have one CD per book, and to print a picture of the book cover on each CD.I'm fixing the problem by making copies for my kids, including the tracks for each book on a separate CD, and printing labels using book cover images. For those who aren't technically savvy, this isn't the best solution. Random House, please think about the audience (4-8 year old kids) before skimping like this again.

If your child enjoys reading the magic tree house series I highly recommend these CD's. We listen to them while reading the books which is great for my 7-year old who can following the words as she goes. The author narrates the book and it's done well, easy to listen to and very enjoyable. My kids learn so much from every book, they go in the past and teach them history but the stores are fun so the kids enjoy it. The series starts off easier reading and gets progressively harder as the books go on. We have to #40.

As others have mentioned, this product is a complete disaster from a practical standpoint. The discs are unlabeled as far as which parts of which books are on each disc, and the books are not cleanly put on one disc per book. It's almost a complete waste of money for this reason.Also the performance is HORRIBLE. Whoever decided MP Osborne was the right person to narrate these stories should be ringing up aspirin at Rite Aid, because the decision was a bad one. MPO is a terrible reader, and this goes especially for her rendering of Annie, who she voices like a whiny 3-year-old.Definitely definitely pass.

My 6yo daughter was dying to get these -- she's read and loved all the books -- and she is enjoying them so far. Immediately my daughter said she wanted to hear "Mummies at Midnight" first -- and that's when I realized that not only are the 8 books split up over 5 CDs, there's not even a TRACK LISTING printed anywhere. Seriously. They're so cheap they can't spring for 8 CDs, ok -- but why on EARTH wouldn't they include a little sheet of paper with the track listing so you can figure out what books/chapters are on what CD?? For a few pennies more, this set would be dramatically better. I feel ripped off.

Great stories! I hate to be critical of such a great author but I wish someone else did the reading on the CDs. The author is the narrator and she's a little monotone and boring to listen to.

We bought these so that our daughter could listen to books in the car rather than watching movies on long trips. These stories are fun for the whole family. The only thing my husband and I don't like is actually the voice of the author. I feel really bad saying it but she just tries a little too hard. Other than that these are great books and you get a whole 8 stories! I would say that the age range for these is probably 3 to 9 years.

Naturally, each and every one of the Wherelocke’s had their own individual gifts and talents. Discovering some all over again, some new and some I’ve seen before in earlier volumes just added to the enjoyment of reading this series.The villain’s in IF HE’S DANGEROUS were particularly vile, which made for a lot of juicy adventures, thrills and chills, excitement, and ever lasting suspense. Much of it ‘edge-of-the-seat’ suspense. This is just simply one of my favorite series with fast paced adventures, quite sensual romances and just one of the best series of exciting adventures.Ashford MacNab, Narrator, takes the impeccable writing of Hannah Howell and makes it into a visible theater of images for the listener. Great job for both author and narrator. LOVE this series.Marilyn Rondeau

I knew and read Lyndsay Sands, but I'm now also a big Hannah Howell fan! These two authors blended these stories beautifully and I enjoyed everything! -- the love story and plot written and woven with humor, fantasy and romance and the history, etc, was accurate to even the odd terminology of items of clothing Also making me very glad to have been born and lived in this century and not nack in the centuries these characters did.. Thank God for indoor plumbing and the advancement. The only suggestion I would make is that next time a glossary of the historic items be included strictly for us word nerds who look up words we don't know when reading.

Let me start of my saying I do not read Hannah Howell because she is this great author who has a way with words. I enjoy her stories, and how they fall into place with the other stories/books. There are certain characters I really like and want to see a story written about them. They seem so smart, and know what they are talking about in regards to love. Of course, they would probably stupid themselves up then too.I do wish she would change up her story outline just a bit once in awhile. It would throw me for a loop if the man wasn't so unaware, and the lady didn't fall DEEPLY in love with the man after knowing him for two days. I know the whole they were meant for each other and stuff...BUT, that's just the authors way of writing. The women though.. I want to shake them sometimes. "oh, he will finally realize it, but I just hope it's not to late." Meanwhile, the man is so confused, doing and saying stupid things, and won't admit any feelings..until that very pivital moment, after he has almost lost her.Again, I know this is her style, so I won't really rate my review on that, but I still wish more attention was occationally focused on the magical aspect of the people, and less on the men and their qualms about love, and thinking on this issue later. Afterall, they are too busy riding their horses to think. I know, I know... story would be short if they came to a conclusion quicker. Everyone just needs to stop stating the fact that they will "think on things later" and I will stop cringing every time I see it.I love her books and continue reading them because:1. I like books based in the past2. I like the magical or special skills given to many of the characters( wish she would focus on them a bit more)3. funny and smart women- most of the time4. hot sexy men5. I want to know about the character in this book, because I read about him in one of the other ones.Any other author would have been given a lower rating,but since this is what she is. I will forgive it. :)
