I would recommend this book to every traveler. Its down-to-earth language makes it easy to digest the "staying healthy" information quickly. Its size makes it easy to carry along in even a small knapsack.

I bought a book back in 1992. Used it for travels to Asia and Afrika. Handy size can always fit your backpack, no matter how light you must pack. I used it for rough trips, as well as for trips around Europe with kids. The book covers all essential aspects that you will need for your travel: (i) which vaccinations to take before you go and what to pack, (ii) what precautions to take to stay fit and healthy, (iii) what to do in case you get sick and (iv) what is the bottom line when you really need to stop being your own doctor and need to find a physician. This comes in handy when you are living in the bush in Africa, no doctor for hundreds of miles, but a well stocked pharmacy near by. I HIGLY recomend this book or anyone planning to travel or live overseas.

I found this book to be very informative. It showed the vaccines that you should get but not only that. It told about the bugs and "creepy crawlies" that you should stay away from in your particular country you are going to. It told of the plants that are poisonous and to stay away from there water unless you have a purifier. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is goind to a third world country!

Dr. Dirk Schroeder worked in Indonesia with the `Volunteers in Asia' program, has a Masters in public health from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate from the Department of International Health, so he's well qualified to write about this subject with some authority. In this book from Moon Publications (which has seen more than one edition and printing) Schroeder offers clear, knowledgeable and down-to-earth practical advice to how you can avoid becoming sick if you live, work or travel in the developing world, and what you can or should do if injured or sick in a location where no professional medical care is available.The first chapters offer advice on illness prevention and focus on basic rules of hygiene, immunizations, malaria pills and the importance of having the right mental attitude. Routine and recommended immunizations and the rules about compulsory yellow fever vaccination are explained in clear and simple language. The section on anti-malarials is quite detailed, and covers the reported adverse side effects of many of these drugs which trouble some travellers so much. There are sections on blood transfusions; on what portable medical supplies you should take with you; food, water and personal hygiene; preventing insect bites (vital in malarial regions); coping with extremes of climate, both hot and cold.Subsequent chapters focus on self-diagnosis and treatment of disease, on buying medicinal drugs locally (in some places antibiotics for example are available over the counter in unregulated amounts) and common infectious diseases. The difference between for example bacillary and amoebic intestinal infections is explained with great clarity. In fact, just about everything you can think of, from mosquito-transmitted diseases to STDs to altitude sickness, is covered.The format is very easy on the eye, with clear sections and headings and with the symptoms of each condition explained with bullet-points. The language is literate and straightforward, and editing exemplary.As with most Moon publications, the paperback binding and page outer-corners are rounded rather than squared-off. This is a nice touch, preventing the book getting `dog-eared' too easily. Remember the book is written for those who may be in locations with no electrical power available to re-charge computers or smartphones, so having the information on paper can be quite useful.Overall, for the intrepid traveller, the information in this book is near-indispensable. In his book, Kevin shares his life events before, during, and after his suicide attempt at the Golden Gate Bridge. He also gives the reader an insight into his mind as he struggles with bipolar disorder. As soon as I received "Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt" in the mail, I could not stop reading as I kept turning the pages day and night. Not once did I get bored with this book as Kevin has a way with words, especially when describing his own mentality. I must give him praise for sharing his personal life with brutal honesty. Even after jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge and surviving such an attempt, he does not live "happily ever after": Kevin admits that each and every day is a challenge to live life to the fullest as there is no "cure" for bi polar disorder or any other mental illness. In this beautifully-written memoir, Kevin Hines does not hold anything back. Kevin reminds everyone that life is truly a gift that should not be taken for granted. Suicide has never, is never, and will never be the solution to any problem. He also gives advice on how to reach out to others if anyone is going through a difficult time with a mental illness. There is help. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt alone in this world due to life's struggles. I loved this book, most likely because it mirrored what I saw happen in CA during the 1980's, 90's and the 21st century. Dr Hanson just true to say what he saw happen. I am a life time Democrat, served with Hispanics in the Marine Corps and my 25 years as a COP. Great people. Great workers in general, good humor, religious, and fun loving. The problem is not with Hispanic people. The problem is the mass migration with nothing set up to "Americanize" the new comers. I live 400 miles north of the Mexican border. By the year 1992 our county jails had 42% Mexican nationals in Custody. Now we currently have about 33% of the former native people of El Salador, 25% of the former people of Honduras and at least 15% of former Mexican nationals have moved to the USA. This mass migration was not planned for. The vast majority of the millions of people had little or no formal education. Just like our jails, our schools were over whelmed. Housing was also overwhelmed. Our county was over run with Mexican National and Salvadoran gangs. The vast majority of Mexican Nationals who moved here were from the Mexican Sate of Michoacan which is rated as a no travel zone for USA citizens because of wide spread violence-homicides, kidnapping, car jacking, and robbery. Our current basic cable has 12 Spanish language channels. In two decades we went though a revolution. Many places in the county English is rarely heard.There is little need to learn English. All government services have tax payer translators. All our leaders seem to do is ignore the problems of a two language society and usually accuse anyone who talks about it as being racist. That is what Dr Hanson talks about in great detail-change as seen through his eyes. Drastic change needs careful planning we have had none here in CA.

Great, sobering read regarding the reality of what's occurring in California. That WALL really needs to be built to help solve this problem.

Facts and data are at a premium but, are prevalent enough to capture the nature and plight of the immigrant, the hosts and those who seek to force utopia on us all. Mr. Hanson tells a story he has lived. His conversational style is empathetic, realistic and prophetic. He is unafraid to point out the weaknesses of the past, the insanity of the present and the certain catastrophe of the future. A voice of reason and one we would do well to consider.

This gentleman presents a sensitive, balanced view of the issues involved. Was impressed with his background related to those issues and his empathy for people involved.Sent a copy to my brother. Wife now reading my copy. Recommend the book.

The movements of that migration must be either stopped or opened is the question the USA Congress and the American people must decide - walls or no walls.MEXIFORNIA is a piece of excellent background information as to what has happened since the 1970s to the present situation. Latins, illegal or not, are the backbone of the farming industry in that state.According to the author, his and thousands of Californians’ lives have changed with the constant flow of young migrants replacing older ones, working on the farms and hard labor. Many of them have not acquired the abilities to assimilate to become citizens or speak the English language.This situation has changed the economic landscape, much for the worst, and could spread throughout the USA.If the USA immigration at our Southern border is of interest to you, MEXIFORNIA is an intelligent read to start your quest of understanding illegal immigration.

The book is well written and what impressed me the most is that the whole immigration problem is looked at from the perspective of the aliens as well as the existing residents of California. According to the author, one of the biggest problems we currently face with illegal immigration is the refusal of nearly all of the immigrants to assimilate to the American way.I'll leave you with one small section of one of the last chapters in the book to give you a glimpse of the contents:"If Mexico had not been contiguous to the United States, if migration had only come in the thousands, not the millions, if self-proclaimed advocates on campus and in the media had been honest and responsible folk, and if this had remained an America of the melting pot rather than the separatist culture of the 1980s and 1990s, then, I think, we would have fewer problems with race, culture, and immigration. But that is a lot of ifs."Too bad the gang-of-eight senators currently working on immigration reform don't take the time to read this book and understand the contents.

Dr. Hanson's perspectives are very enlightening. He identifies the issues, gives ample background, and offers solutions. Even though this book was written a dozen years ago the issues and facts are still very relevant. A must read for anyone wishing for a better understanding of the immigration problems in California, the proverbial miner's canary for the rest of the country.

Very informative and written by a credible source. You need to read this because our demographics are moving in this direction and you should understand what this means for the US.

If you hate yourself and want to suffer, this is the textbook for you. It is rich in details and pictures though.

Great book, but the MindTap app is not included though the product description and extensive publisher promotional materials on the page seem to indicate that it is. Buy elsewhere and be sure you are getting the app, as many of the photos in this book are reduced to the point of uselessness and you'll need the app to see them.

This was supposed to have an access code with it so I could access MindTap as well. It did not come with it. Don't be fooled by all that you read in the discription. I thought it was a complete set, especially for the price I paid. I started my class yesterday and I am disappointed with this purchase.

This book was required for my Survey of Art History class. I did enjoy the reading though. It was an easy read given the fact that it was in textbook form. The author does an excellent of keeping you interested throughout each chapter.

The book was helpful. No pages missing and all context was accounted for. It did have a stell cigarette odor when i first received it but other than that the book was fine.

Worked well for my wife's art class.
