In termos of information Mr Kinzer's book is first rate, covering all aspects of the disintegration and rebirth of Rwanda: a brief history of the country, a description of the genocide, the story of the war, and the achievements and challenges of the new government. The contribution to the tragedy of the United Nations and western nations - in particular Belgium and France - is duly documented. The author benefited greatly from intensive access to the president and conversations with both eyewitnesses of Rwanda's tragic past and contributers to the country's regeneration.But the campaign of the Rwandan Patriotic Front and its principal leader somehow deserves more. The story of Paul Kagame and his comrades is the Africa's equivalent of Mao's Long March. Mr Kinzer's effort suffers from a text that could be better organized, better focused - and better written.

This is my fifth Kinzer book and it's possibly my favorite. The book is a page turner and competed with nothing for my attention while I read it. The genocide event in Rwanda was so horrible and the following recovery effort so ambitious that it almost angers me that the topic is less talked about. The book is historical but also poses questions around some intense themes such as following command versus personality morality, the role of religion in a government, and the true value of western human rights groups. This book gave me a lot to think about in its discussion of reconciliation, the UN, and censorship among other topics.

An amazing account of the history of a nation faced with severe hardships and ongoing turmoil. Let’s hope this true story focusing on the current leader plays out from the betterment group of all Rwandans.

It is history from a different perspective that I had not read about before. When individuals and countries had the power to do something, most did little if nothing. Rwanda is a small, landlocked country with few resources. This was an African issue, tribes fighting tribes, colonial powers protecting their age-old self-interests. So most did nothing. That is the awfulness of a "A Thousand Hills" where the darkest part of the human soul came out with all of its hate and prejudice. Some wonder whether it will happen again.However, this is not just another book about the genocide. It is a book about a audacious vision of turning Rwanda into a different place by 2020. It is about a leader with a dream of a secure and free Rwanda, reducing poverty, providing clean water, electricity and education in Rwanda and creating jobs, business, good governance and ending corruption to mention a few. There are incredible stories of what is taking place in Rwanda to make this dream a reality.There are also serious criticisms. One of the most stinging criticism lies at the door of the United Nations in 1994 and their failed peace-keeping efforts under the direction of Kofi Annan, their mis and/or failed-communication to the countries in the Security Council of what was actually taking place on the ground in Rwanda and their lack of taking any responsibility of that failure after the genocide. There are also criticism of the leadership of President Paul Kagame.After reading this book, I want to know more. I want to go to Rwanda and see the changes and see what is happening. If radical change can happen like this in Rwanda, it can happen in any country. I highly recommend this book. Get your tickets......

This was an incredibly interesting read - providing a balanced and rational view of the tragedy of Rwanda - and the role the outside world played in not only allowing the genocide, but in actively supporting the extremists where it suited their own political agenda - before, during and after the 100 days of carnage. Living in South Africa at the time, and only being shown the media of the day, it has taken nearly 20 years for me to truly understand that this was not simply tribal rivalry, but mass extermination of one tribe by another. An important read if you really want to understand how remarkable Paul Kagame is as a world leader - even if he doesn't fit our nice 'democratic' ideals. But then, those nations that espouse these most vociferously were the most damned by this story.

I've had the book for a day and read it twice. I always wondered if I really needed the color edition of this series given how fantastic the black and white originals are. Let me tell you Nathan Fairbairn has gone above and beyond. I love the size of the book, and the color looks fantastic. The stories are brought to life even more so and are quite pleasing to the eyes. The quality of the paper is top notch and doesn't show through the pages. Plus there are a ton of gems in the back of the book like the "making of" and other goodies. Bryan Lee O'Malley writes fantastic characters and I would highly recommend all of his books. There's a bit of development in Scott and Ramona's, and the same humor and very human conversations that have always charmed me so. If you're a fan of the Pilgrim this is a necessity to add to your collection. Now I can't wait until November for the final edition. TL:DR It's top notch quality, and a must if you loved the original copies.

Bryan O'Malley's run pokes fun at the banalities of life while making you feel like a twenty something kid again. The art is charming and original (even if you read Japanese comics). The diverse cast of characters are unique archetypes that keep you hoping they will come back in every panel. May slightly confuse those unfamiliar with videogame pop-culture, but not enough to distract one from the story. My wife especially loved the interlude short stories. Scott Pilgrim will leave you wishing for more once you've completed this six volume series.

[copied from my Goodreads review]Enjoyed this one possibly as much as I did the first volume. Scott had fewer total idiot moments (although confusing his brother [with a different last name] for Gideon does rank up there on the Idio-meter) and the full-volume conflict between Scott and the twins (and their robots) was adventurous.I liked seeing Ramona & Kim interact more, and I wonder if the ending of the novels is going to be a lot different than the movie... I'm definitely sensing something that might happen, but I don't know if I'm just imagining it or not. Excited to see how it all ends in the next volume.(Also, I think the extra content at the back of this volume ranks higher than most of the other bonus pages, except maybe the first volume)

Once upon a time, a comic artist named Bryan Lee O'Malley did a comic series around a central character named Scott Pilgrim. That comic series got made into a movie called Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. The movie was not bad, but was definitely worth seeing if only because it made me want to read the comic series it was based on. And I'm here now to tell you that O'Malley's original series is awesome. It's also almost impossible to describe, but I'll give it my best shot and say it's original, it's funny, it's way surreal, and it's probably unlike anything you've ever read.On the surface, the plot arc of the six-volume series is centered around Scott Pilgrim, a twenty-something game-playing slacker in a Canadian garage band, who meets the girl of his dreams (literally) and finds he must defeat her seven evil ex-es if he wants to date her. But like an iceberg, the surface only hints at everything that lies beneath.Scott Pilgrim Vs The Universe is the fifth volume in the series. The cast of returning characters include:Scott Pilgrim, a wide-eyed and likeable but perpetually clueless 23-year-old slacker who's in a garage band called Sex Bob-omb. Who, in this volume, has a birthday. ("Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement to make. I, Scott Pilgrim, will be the best 24-year-old... _ever_!")Ramona Flowers, a roller-blading delivery girl for Amazon.ca and the girl of Scott's dreams. ("You and _her_?!" "Oh, relax. It was a phase.")Knives Chau, his 17-year-old Chinese former sort-of girlfriend who still has a major crush on him. I offer that I've been a student of the human figure for twenty years, and have taught adult education classes on the subject, myself. The content of this book mirrors my own thinking and drawing habits. If one takes the information presented in this book to heart, one will progress far. The writing is consice and informative and the many drawings are authoritative and a delight to behold. A book well worth the price. Thanks to the artist-author for creating it.

I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan since the beginning and a member of their official fan club (Ten Club). They are definitely one of my favorite bands of all time. I'm so happy with this book! It's a great companion piece to the PJ20 film, but even if you haven't seen that, you can really enjoy this book. It's full of photos, memorabilia, notes, artwork etc. and has the words of the band members themselves, as well as other artists like Chris Cornell, Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, U2, and other musicians that toured or worked with Pearl Jam. The book takes you year by year (a chapter for each year) from the very beginning (the days of Green River & Mother Love Bone) to 2010. There are also chapters describing the making of each album from Ten up to Backspacer.There are so many interesting stories and funny anecdotes that I hadn't heard before. Some crazy stuff happened on those tours! I love reading the band's own words on how they wrote each song and what the songs mean. And, to be honest, I am a huge Eddie Vedder fan and I really loved having lots of pictures of him, from 20 years of pictures!If you are a big Pearl Jam fan, get this book! You will love it!

Allow me to make one thing perfectly clear right up front...while I love Pearl Jam and consider myself a big fan, I also don't have the kind of encyclopedic knowledge that I know some people have for the band. I can't honestly tell you how much of the material in this book, the little tidbits and snippets and nuggets of information from the band, their fellow musicians, and their friends is already known and how much of it is revelatory and new.What I can tell you is my own impression of the book, and that's that this is a fantastic book that any fan will love. It is a great companion piece to the year-long celebration that has been PJ20. It begins with a great, long foreword by Cameron Crowe primarily about the role Pearl Jam has played in rock music and how they have managed to survive by, in his words, actively seeking less. There's a great note from Bono to Crowe that's quoted in the intro asking why Eddie won't just let the band release a summer album full of hit singles. This is followed by a short focus on each (current) band member (excluding Boom, who gets a bit shorted in general), which includes a very brief biography--essentially their birthday, where they were born, and a quick summary of their early musical resumé--and answers to a few background questions, the same questions asked of each member, about how they got started in music and what their earliest influences and most memorable experiences were. This is all pre-PJ information.The book then jumps into the biography of the band, beginning with the years 1962-1989 and the evolutions of Green River, Shadow, Bad Radio, and Soundgarden. At this point the book is still largely a straight narrative by the author, with occasional quotes thrown in. These are accompanied by some great early pictures of the various band members. Once the book gets into 1990 the narrative style shifts into an emphasis on specific dates or general time periods ("last week of October," etc.) and more of a tale told by the band and its friends. Generally each time period, at least early on in the book, has a short description saying a major event that occurred at that time followed by at least one quote from a band member or friend of the band, which range from Chris Cornell to Ann Wilson to Dave Grohl, Pete Townshend, Ben Harper, and others. Some of these sound like they are contemporary reflections, while others sound like they are quotes from the time. Either way it works just fine. I found these quotes, again with the disclaimer above, to be very informative and exciting and at times funny, like when Eddie is describing how, without having met Mike, he tried to have Mike kicked out of the band during his first meeting with Jeff and Stone in LA prior to sending them his Mamma-Son demo tape, solely because he liked three-piece and four-piece bands better than five-piece. Later in the book these quotes become fewer and far between and the sections are more just a quick description of an event that occurred, although still informative.As to the organization of the book, each chapter is a different year, from 1990 to 2010. Within these chapters are the aforementioned chronological narratives combined with, when applicable, special sections that highlight particular events. Mostly these are the stories and releases of the different PJ studio albums, but there are also sections on TotD, their Neil Young collaboration Mirror Ball, Roskilde, Lost Dogs, and Into the Wild. There is no 2011 chapter to describe the PJ20 events. Again there is a greater emphasis on the band's earlier years, with 1990 - 2000 taking up about 210 pages and 2001 - 2010 taking up about 120. Some of the chapters are pretty short, particularly the "non-album-year" ones. The book is absolutely filled with photos, either in the background behind the text, as full-page photos, multi-page photos, or small pieces that are stuck into blank space on the pages. And that's a great picture of Stone with Anthony Kiedis in drag at the beginning of Chapter 1999.If you are a fan I think you will love this book. It is the band telling its story largely in its own words, and the insights and stories that come out of that are well worth the price. The photos often help to tell that story. If you want to see the band finally opening up about their own legacy, I have a feeling you'll see all that in Cameron Crowe's upcoming Pearl Jam Twenty film (I've got my ticket). If you want to read about it at your own pace and get a probably more detailed narrative than what the film will be able to show, then be sure to pick up this book. The book chronicles the formation of the band from the inception of Green River to the present. The best part of the book is that there are so many quotes that it feels like you are backstage and the band is reminiscing with you telling you their personal journeys in their own words. The sections about each individual album are so insightful. The pictures are amazing many from their personal collections. If you are a die hard fan you will appreciate all the work that Cameron Crowe went into making this book. Even if you think you know everything about Pearl Jam you will find something you did not know when you read this book. It is an essential for anybody who is a fan and also for those who are just discovering the world of Pearl Jam!

Audible Review: I did a re-listen when I bought the audible companion. I still stand on my review below and I think everyone will enjoy this narrator. I had no issues distinguishing between characters. I would buy more audibles with her as a narrator.Story Review: This series is going into my list of top favorites. The way this story unfolded with all the crazy actions of these equally crazy people just had me completely hooked. I enjoyed trying to figure out truth from all the secrets, lies and sabotage. Plus, there were so many side characters that added life to this story.While I thought Alayna was way too needy, I still rooted for her. Her neediness was a huge part of the plot and why things went down the way they did. Despite the fact that I probably shouldn't have liked Hudson for his past, I actually loved him! I'm really looking forward to reading his book to get his POV. There were so many times when I wasn't sure of what was real when it came to him.Celia is the one side character that deserves honorable mention. I predicted I wanted to shove her off a cliff in the first book and that still stands. Wow, what a conniving woman! Normally I hate other women drama, but I think this author did her part extremely well and it's obvious, her role is very necessary to the overall plot.I highly recommend this series. Just be ready to go on a ride!

Layne would not leave it alone. I just knew she was going to mentioned Hudson's mother, she can be too much at times. She is also a bit simplistic, especially when Hudson declares his love in the only way he could at the time, and for her not to see it! I was so sick of Layne constant manipulative childish crying, it was exhausting as a reader. Hudson, did everything to show how much he loved her and yet she was obsessed in wanting to hear it in so many words, such a winer. I was getting so sick of her insecurities. I love Mira's curiosity and insights. Also, the dirty old man, Jack. Most say that Hudson was the only reason why I kept reading this series. He literally turns me on! There were some ugly characters in this book, Celia and of course Gwen came across as too aggressive and boarder line antagonistic at first.

Working on trusting one another seems to be paying off in spades for Hudson and Alayna. To ensure that their relationship continues to grow in a healthy manner, both must surrender to themselves and to one another, becoming utterly transparent and honest with one another.Laying all of their cards on the table has left both, Hudson and Alayna, in positions they have never faced before. They are now completely vulnerable to one another, leaving their guard down to all of those who surround them.While this newfound vulnerability seems to be bringing them closer, it also has allowed for outside influences to seek their opportunity to break the happy couple up once and for all.So, it comes as a bit of a surprise, with this fresh honesty and openness, which some old demons from the past come out of hiding. The truth becomes diluted and no one, even our once happy couple, seems to know where the real story begins or ends.Hudson and Alayna must sort out the truths amongst the stories being spewed; or risk losing their shot at real love. I highly recommend that you read this novel, if you too, happen to be a fan of the complexities that make up the relationship between Hudson and Alayna. You will gain new insight and continue to be drawn in, for another spectacular journey, with characters that are unlike any that I have read before.

I stumbled onto this author and the first book of this series, Fixed On You, and downloaded a sample to give it a try. Well... needless to say, the sample lead to the first book being purchased, and then the second, Found in You, and finally, the third in the series, Forever In You. There is just something about these books that hooks you in and keeps you guessing throughout the entire series. There is emotion, angst, sex, love, hate, suspense... twists and turns in Hudson and Laynie's relationship so much so that you can't seem to put it down. I read all three books in succession and am glad I did, not sure the impact of the books would have been the same if there were long waits in between each one. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, the author threw in a curve ball that would take you by surprise and keep you glued to the pages. Both Hudson and Laynie have their own issues to deal with and this is a story of two people coming together against odds against them to heal each other and make each other better. It's a steamy, emotional ride and one awesome story! Looking forward to Chandler's book and definitely more from this new favored author!
