It's hard to convey, I think, just how much of a blockbuster book of sociology and modern political economy this is, especially given the nebulous constellation of heavy-hitting themes which mark its title - Life, Capitalism, Biotechnology. A book about all of these things, yes; but, crucially, one entirely rooted in the concrete soil of historical and sociological analysis that so often goes missing from titles like these. Shifting between the pharmaceutical dimensions of the South African AIDS crisis, the development of recombinant DNA tech (think cloning) and stem cell research in the US, as well as the tracking of global financial flows and evolving international security concerns, Cooper brings all these topics and more together in one of the most eye-opening reads I've embarked upon in a long time.More than just a mishmash of loosely-connected motifs, at its core lies the central insight upon which 'Life as Surplus' turns: that in biotechnology, the so-called 'debt-form' of capitalism finds its perfect instantiation. Here's what this means: the peculiar thing about debt is its ability to generate wealth though nothing other than the very promise of its repayment: so long as debt is owed, interest must be payed. As Marx pointed out and Cooper reminds us, this is nothing other than the high point of capitalist 'delirium', the point at which "capital begins to imagine itself as self-valorising value: a life-form possessed of its own powers of self-generation". And of this, Cooper will simply ask: what of the 'life-form' itself that capital is said to mirror in its debt-form? Do recent advances in biotechnology not themselves transform 'life itself' into a self-generating source of value as well, insofar as life is just that which can re-produce itself?For Cooper, the answer here is an unequivocal yes, and in such a way that both biotechnology and capitalism merge in their drive to "situate the locus of wealth creation in the pure debt form - the regeneration of money from money and life from life, without final redemption". It's a fascinating thesis, and one explored through an engagement with both the actual technologies involved (the discussion of bioreactors and self-regenerating stem-cell lines is one of the absolute highlights of this book) and the capitalist dynamics that drive their uptake and proliferation. As much a study of modern capitalism as it is of biotechnology then, 'Life as Surplus' thinks the two together in ways that render each inseparable and our understanding richer for it. I particularly appreciated Cooper's insistence that, far from just being another sop about the commercialization of 'life', at stake here is the *kind* of commercialization at work, a promissory and future-orientated one, one whose specific contours make all the difference.Indeed, it's largely the analysis of the specific temporalities at work in both capitalism and biotechnology that makes this work so gripping, with its focus on the twinned notions of debt and promise providing a new lens through which to approach nothing less than the much-discussed field of 'biopolitics'. Readers familiar with the philosophical work of Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, and Roberto Espositio in particular will appreciate the novel perspectives and subtle correctives offered within as well, especially given the sociologically and even technologically informed discussions which underpin the few flights into 'theory' that Cooper occasionally risks. While the hype and public prominence of biotech has somewhat waned in the 10 years since this book's publication (displaced, perhaps, by its as-yet unfulfilled promises and the rise of 'big data'), one wonders if the quiet is simply a calm before a resurgent storm whose rumblings are nowhere better set out than this sensational study.

Insightful, innovative, highly readable, though at times dense. Cooper provides a novel analysis of the encounter between neoliberal innovation economies, biotechnology and the religious right. The strength of the book lies in its theoretical rigour and historical detail. It also advances some provocative ideas about the nature of neoliberal economics, namely that its long-term success is fed by its own regulation/deregulation dynamics.

A prescient & insightful contribution not only to Science & Technology Studies, but to broader dialogues about biopolitics, markets, capitalism and environmentalism. I read "Wine and War" shortly after returning from a 3-week trip to France during which we became much more knowledgeable about French wines and their place in France's culture and history and raison d'etre. Remnants of WWII still prevail, particularly in the historical center of the many small villages that we visited. Two aspects of France's rich history emerge repeatedly in the national conscience - the Revolution and the Occupation.The book covers the elaborate schemes enacted by the French to protect their valuable cellars, their vineyards and their wine-making operations from the looting, gluttonous Germans. Germany actually established "Weinfuhrers" whose sole responsibility was to organize the sourcing, purchasing and shipment of wines from France to Germany. The French winemakers learned to seal off sections of their cellars to avoid detection, to sell the Germans only their inferior wines, to make new wines look like old wines by dusting the bottles, and many other techniques.A huge cache of fine wines was repatriated from Eagle's Nest at the end of the war in a bizarre and intricate wartime evacuation. Cases of wine were strapped onto stretchers and carefully lowered hundreds of meters to a waiting convoy of trucks. Soldiers stripped their tanks and trucks of non-essential equipment to make room for the precious cargo. This episode demonstrated the true reverence of the French for their sacred wines.It's a well-researched book. The final ~14% includes Footnotes, Bibliography, Glossary, etc. In the Epilogue the author discusses how some of the oldest and most respected wineries re-established themselves after the war. There is a lot of interesting history and culture in this book, not only about wine, but about the wine dynasties and the resistance movement that helped France to retain its dignity and reclaim the great heritage as the finest winemakers in the world. I really enjoyed reading about places we had visited during our tour. We enjoyed a wine tasting in a 13th century cellar in Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy and I wondered whether it had been bricked off during the war to protect the inventory.

someone loaned us this book right before our trip to France- and we tossed it in the bag, and thought sure if we get to it that would be fine....so glad we did!as we drove from Paris to Champagne we started reading out loud, the portions that dealt with the Champagne region during the Nazi occupation. Absolutely fascinating, and sad of course, but gave a historical view that one wouldn't get otherwiseeven if you don't travel to France, it's a very good read- we must never forget WW2 and those brave citizens that had to endure it

This is ONE of the very BEST books I have ever read. I LOVE Wine. I LOVE Books. And I LOVE history and this books combines ALL of those. This book was part history, part wine guide. I learned so much from this book. I could NOT read it before bed or at lunch because it was so good, I would LOSE track of all time and then get LOST in the book. The description are so well done you are THERE. You can see it, because you are THERE. LOVE this book and I HIGHLY recommend this book and I am so glad I bought it so that I can read it over and over and over again.

The title of this book tells it all. I never gave wine of France any thought. This book will give you new words to lookup and add to your vocabulary as you learn what it takes to make good wine. The different wine regions of France and the chateau's and their owners hiding thousands of bottles of their best wines in caves from the Nazi's. They changed labels on bottles that the Germans ordered to be shipped to Germany or took. Many of the families' sons were forced into the German Army and some shipped to the Russian front. Some wine families were sent to death camps. One wine family hid American fliers who were shot down, and smuggled them out of France, and another hid Jews. It tell about Petain and the Vichy government. It is a story of endurance and survival.

What a great collection of recollections from one of the most tumultuous periods in history, especially for the French Wine Industry. Whilst the damage to the actual vineyards was not as severe as what occurred in WWI, WWII definitely had a significant impact on the wine industry, poor vintages, commandeering of wine by the occupiers, damage vineyards, etc.Well researched and written. Recommend any wine aficionado, historian or anyone who has an interested in understanding more about the occupation of France by Germany during WWII

Fascinating recount of the intersection between the wine producers of France and the third Reich. What happened during the war, how did the wine producers and wholesalers save their wine/fields while seemingly giving it up to the Germans. And consequently how did the sales and production of wine in France and then in Europe evolve because of these experiences. Not well written, sadly, but a well researched and interesting account. I have recommended it and sent it to many of my friends and family over the years.

A superb recounting of the trials and triumphs of the French winemakers as they dealt with the staggering demands of the top Nazis and the German nation as a whole. How they survived the lack of manpower, horsepower, needed materials and other challenges to maintaining their vineyards is well told. Also, how some of the very finest wines were successfully hidden and how the French were able to fob off sub-standard wines to fulfill orders for the German army and other organizations in the Reich show that the winemakers scored some victories against their foes. Very well written and researched, the book is both informative and entertaining.

This is a interlinear of both the Old and New Testament. The format is a three column grid with the KJV phrase/word in the first column, the Hebrew/Greek word in the middle column and the most common translation of the word in the third column. In the first column, the word of interest is "linked" to the Strong's dictionary which gives the Hebrew/Greek word and possible translations, how it is translated in the KJV and a numeric mapping to the root word if it is a derivative. I love the book because it is easy to use and fairly quick to navigate through. You can get to the word of interest and do the survey. I also took Hebrew and Greek in seminary and this is my "triage". If I want to go deeper, I can consult the front line lexicons and grammars. It is very usefule for the layman and maya enrich your Bible reading and stucy. I recommend it.

This is worth every penny and then some on Kindle. It is very simple to use and takes you immediately to the original word. This has been my singular best investment on Kindle for study. I am away from my other books many times and this volume on Kindle is my 'go to' volume for the definition of the original words. If you are uncertain, Buy It!

First, Peter Sedgwick of Cardiff University (Wales) has written a book that very accurately addresses the needs of a wide audience. University teachers with little specialized training in continental philosophy can learn much from Sedgwick's dense, sophisticated arguments; students who are trying to understand either contemporary philosophy or critical theory can also use this book as a comprehensive guide to this field. Second, thematically, the book is wonderfully conceived and orchestrated: the author manages to adroitly integrate many of the literary and cultural themes of Levinas, Derrida, Lyotard, Deleuze, and Guattari into his account of the backgrounds of continental philosophy (Descartes and Kant on metaphysics and epistemology). Third, the book orchestrates themes of great interest that are often neglected in US liberal arts programs: anti-humanism, ethical and political implications of critical theory, and the nature of philosophical language. Sedgwick writes with considerable lucidity: he explains sophisticated ideas of great complexity about as clearly as possible. The book has an outstanding "Further Reading" section.

My Dragons obsessed 5-year-old son and I truly enjoyed this. Unlike "The Book of Dragons" that explains each variant of dragon, this one is a storybook which follows the plot of the most recent movie. It is a quick read but well-written. Included cards are a nice addition because they have 'facts' about the dragons. Important to note: if you haven't seen HTTYD 3: Hidden World yet, this book may be a bit of a spoiler.
