Martin Guerre is the son of a peasant family who migrated to France from Spain's Basque region. Martin marries Bertrande. But after having a child, 24-year old Martin first steals grain from his own father (a vile act with serious consequences back then) and then runs away from his village for a life of adventure in Spain. His place is soon taken by Arnaud du Tilh, an audacious liar from nearby Sajas, who shows up at Artigat claiming he's the long-gone Martin Guerre.This is of course a story that cannot take place in the era of Facebook and Internet databases. But back then no villager has any photos taken or paintings made. No one actually has a firm description of the original Martin. Even though he is not as tall and thin as the Martin the Original, Martin's four sisters testify that the stocky Arnaud is indeed their lost brother. Go figure.That may be hard to believe but what to make of Bertrande who accepts the fake Martin as her real husband and admits him to her bed to give birth to his children? Can a woman's memory get that frail within such a short period of time? Or did she talk herself into that relationship thinking she can back out of it anytime she wanted by claiming she was deceived? We'll never know.What we know for sure is, Bertrande and the Fake Martin build for themselves a stable and almost exemplary marriage which lasts three years. The honeymoon ends when hubris rears its ugly head. The Fake Martin feels so confident in his new skin that he tries to sue Pierre Guerre (Martin's uncle) over property rights and inheritance. That's when Pierre, who is already suspicious of the Fake Martin's identity, sues Arnaud for identity and property theft, which can be punished by death.At the trial, the Fake Martin defends himself with remarkable vigor thanks to his prodigious memory. He quotes so many correct details about his past relationship with the Artigat residents that some judges start to think he might be the real Martin Guerre. That's when the real Martin, who has lost a leg in a battle while serving the Spanish King, shows up at the doorsteps of the courthouse in Toulouse and declares himself.At the end, Arnaud cannot maintain the facade to the bitter end and is forced to get down on his knees and admit his crime. After a public hanging, his body is burned to erase his memory for eternity.What's fascinating to me is the seriousness with which a 16th century French court approached the lawsuit. The judges listened to hundreds of witnesses and tried every method they could think of to trip the Fake Martin and force him to reveal himself. If you're one of those who think that modern monogamy is an invention of the Victorian era, it's instructive to read that in 16th century France, the punishment for adultery was death. The mad courage of an impostor to take on a whole village and the mental energy he brings to the job at hand at the risk of death is nothing short of fascinating. No wonder the story was made into a movie, starring the lantern-jawed Gerard Depardieu.As I was reading this story I was amazed at the professional discipline with which the lawyers and judges of the time have handled this case. Reputations were on the line since the French judges were already an autonomous body of professionals back then with careers to build and images to protect. They were in competition with one another for glory and cash. That much is certain. But they were also struggling with the technical details such as interrogating the suspects, recording testimonies, deciding on how to use one testimony against another, sifting out motivations and contributing factors, thinking and weighing all the different possibilities, etc., all the while trying to stay within the bounds of the law. The author lifts the dusty covers of an opaque past and treats us to an illuminating look at what perhaps Max Weber would've called the "bureaucratization" of the judiciary process.Another reason why I was enamored by this book is the way it portrays in rich detail the unnerving frailty of human memory; the way our memories are bent out of shape for a long list of reasons. Memory is identity. If we can't trust our memories, how can we trust our identities? How can we trust a court testimony or a simple recollection when not one, not two, but FOUR sisters bear false testimony about the way their very own brother looked, walked, and spoke? Can such a thing happen in our own society today? I hesitate to say "no".A great and easy read. A page turner and a thriller that you can finish in a single day. Highly recommended.

The story of Martin Guerre is a conundrum that's inexplicable. How could a husband and wife not know each other? How could an imposter who did not have a Basque accent fool his in-laws and the rest of the village? Davis does an interesting but only okay job with the evidence, projecting onto the motivations of Ms. Guerre without any evidence very modern values that just don't seem plausible for her society.

This is not a new work. Far from it. It is an infinitely beautiful work, and beautiful book. However do not confuse the beauty of the work, the research, the import with the underlying cruelty and harshness of this every day life. Alas, some things never change.

I enjoyed reading it. Very clever situation. Watched the movie as well. Slightly different, of course. I liked the book better.

Turns out Martin is impotent, and the family believes he is under a spell. After years of marriage with no offspring, Martin is miraculously cured and he and Bertrande have a child. Shortly thereafter, Martin steals from his father and flees the village.And then no one sees hide nor hair of Martin for eight years. Bertrande refuses to take another man and lives with Martin's uncle, who has married her mother. The whole village is surprised when, after eight years, Martin returns--shorter, stockier, lighter-skinned and with smaller feet. But he knows everything that Martin should and so the people welcome him home and Bertrande returns to married life with "the new Martin."More years pass and, when Martin tries to retake control of his family's finances, his uncle takes him to trial as an imposter. The rest of the book is a dramatic court case. Is this the real Martin? Why does he look so different, and if he's an impostor, how did he know what he did when he showed up? Why hasn't anyone questioned him before? The courtroom drama builds in tension like the most modern of thrillers, and the dramatic showdown between "Martin" and a late arrival to the case is shocking.That's what I loved about the book--Davis knows how to tell a story, and tell it well. And the book is short, easily read within a few hours (if you're a slow reader, like myself) or 45 minutes (like some of my friends).Unfortunately, I have to disagree with most of the conclusions Davis draws from the story. She clearly views Bertrande as some kind of proto-feminist hero, "self-fashioning" her own life, collaborating with a liar against her family by choosing to take in a man she knew to be an impostor. But none of the evidence Davis examines back up her conclusions. The judge whose book she uses as a source believed Bertrande totally innocent of complicity with the impostor, as did everyone else back then. And while it was interesting to view the events of Martin Guerre's life against the backdrop of the Protestant Reformation, then taking Europe by storm, it's quite a stretch to break the imposture case down along those lines.The flaws of Davis's book are not unique--they're common to all "microhistory," histories that try to build on tiny events that, by their very nature, often lack detailed, complete evidence, and often important evidence at that. But in the end, Davis's book is so well-written and enjoyable I'm willing to forgive it its faults and enjoy it for what it is--a rousing medieval tale with a healthy dose of speculation.Recommended.

 I bought this book for my two year old son that is speech delayed. He went from saying absolutely zero words to learning all of the colors, numbers, fruits, and animal sounds in this book! I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say, he loved the book and started learning from it the very first day we received it. It is so hard to find Spanish books that an overly active toddler will actually want to “read”. With this book the liftable tabs keep him entertained and the bright colorful visuals keep him focused. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone with bilingual babies/toddlers!

He follows this brief translation with a commentary which is based on the full section. The full section is not in his book. The commentary focuses on his understanding of kabbalistic principle and his studies in consciousness. He writes that his goal is to “bring forth the hidden mysteries [of the Torah].” Topics include ritual, prayer, the Tree of Life, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and evil, the mystical meaning of many things in the Torah, and much else.What is the Tikkunei Zohar?Most people have misconceptions about the Zohar (meaning, “luminous”) and the Tikkunei Zohar, also called Tekunei Hazohar, “rectification (or repairs) of the Zohar.” They believe the Zohar and the Tekunei are holy documents composed by Rabbi Simeon bar Yochai around the year 130 CE. However, scholars recognize that Moses d’ Leon, a Spaniard living in Granada, wrote the Zohar around 1286, that parts of the book were added by others after his death, and that the work is a pious forgery. Zohar, “luminous,” alludes to the notion that God illuminates the people through mysticism. But while ostensibly dealing with enlightenment, the Zohar is usually very difficult to understand and many of its ideas are mystical, which are hard if not impossible to fathom.The Tekunei Zohar is a separate document than the Zohar. Its first printing was in 1558. It contains seventy commentaries. The idea of “repair” is not to fix the thirteenth century Zohar but to repair God.Both the Zohar’s and Tekunei’s basic teaching is the doctrine of the Sefirot, “numbers,” ten divine entities (parts of God) that function in ten different ways. The lowest entity is shekhinah, also called malkhut, which mystics see as the anthropomorphic feminine part of God that interacts with humans.The mystics feel that the ten parts of God became separated and that humans have a duty to help God become one with all his ten disjointed parts reassembled. When this is done, the messianic age will arrive. While mystically-minded people may enjoy the Zohar and Tekunei or parts of it, rationally-minded people will find it hard to understand and difficult to accept ideas they do understand. They find the notions in these books especially difficult since most mystics take them literally. Some examples of teachings in the Tekunei are:• Prayers form the basis for the throne upon which God can reside.• God’s name Adonai is the chariot for y-h-v-h (another name for God).• The lowest part of the ten parts of God is female, which has to be reunited with the other ten parts of God. People should learn from this and unify with their feminine nature.• There is no Torah without fear and no fear without Torah.• The twelve zodiacal signs determine the sign for each hour and what its aspect is.

Francine Rivers has been one of my most favorite authors since I read "Redeeming Love" back in 2002. The way she weaves words is truly a gift from above, no doubt. When I saw that she was releasing a devotional, I knew that I must have it! But not only because it was written by her, but because of the subject matter. "Earth Psalms~ Reflections on How God Speaks Through Nature" is something very dear to my heart. I love finding Him in the smallest of things that most never see. I take great delight in the way the wind blows, or the twinkle of a star. All Him whispering His wonder. Francine captures this perfectly in this devotional, along with some absolutely gorgeous photography. If you are a Francine Rivers fan, you will most certainly want this. But I think it's also a sweet devotional to give as a gift.I received this book from Tyndale for my honest review.

I've read many of Rivers fiction books and am a great fan. This creative non-fiction book is my kind of book. I love nature and enjoy every moment in woods, mountains, or in my back yard. This is an excellent choice for a birthday or Christmas gift. The photographs are exceptional, the layout looks royal. Pages are covered in fancy edging. A must gift book!

Francine Rivers, is as always, thought provoking and encouraging. I just love everything she writes and this devotional is just as wonderful as I would expect. It is not just well written but is also a very beautiful book. I don't think you'll be sorry you purchased this inspirational devotional book.

This is coming from a some what knowledgable 11 year old girl, but I absolutely LOVED this book. I have always been fascinated with WWII and I finally found another book about it. I really like how it explains the capture of the less famous, but much more evil of a person, Adolf Eichmann, who I never knew existed. I also cannot believe how he stayed in hiding for 15 years until his capture. This book was a SMASHING read. I thought there was not a single part of the book that was boring or not interesting. I kept turning the pages on my iPad to see what would happen next. I can tell you, I really enjoyed this book and if you are interested in WWII and want a good book to read about it, choose this book to read. I highly recommend this book! Though this was a book written for the young adult market, I was, nonetheless, riveted by this gripping account of the capture of Adolf Eichmann, one of the most notorious Nazis. Prior to reading this book, I had only known that he had been captured in Argentina by Israeli agents. I had not realized the intricacies of the plan and number of pieces that had to fall in place for the plan to succeed.For years, Adolf Eichmann had been off the radar. Despite circulation of his photograph and the efforts of Simon Weisenthal, one of the most well known of the Nazi hunters, it was if Adolf Eichmann had disappeared off the face of the earth. Then, around 1953, information started coming in that Eichmann might be found in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a bastion for Nazis who had fled Germany after the war. Thanks to a resourceful young woman living in Argentina, more precise information was able to be developed. From there, a daring plan for his capture was hatched.This is an exciting account of that capture and all that it entailed. Bringing Adolf Eichmann to justice sent a strong message that reverberated throughout the world. The notorious Nazi, known for bringing about the extermination of so many, would soon discover the price that he would pay for his crimes against humanity. This book is illustrated with many archival photos that enhance the account of what transpired.

I turned to this book in the middle of reading various Daniel Silva spy novels, including one involving the Holocaust. My wife and I are currently addicted to Silva, and I figured that The Nazi Hunters would be a break that would provide interest but not the sort of page-turning, late-at-night narrative that Silva's novels always give. Wrong! This book is gripping from start to finish. It is very well researched, and told with a storyteller's gift for narrative; I couldn't put it down. Bascomb brilliantly relates the details of the hunt for Eichmann, and the meticulous planning that went into his capture and secret smuggling out of Argentina.Eichmann was a monster, though of course he maintained till the last that tired defense: that in arranging the capture and transportation to death of millions of innocent people he was "just following orders". It is remarkable that the men involved in bringing him to justice - most of whom had lost family in the Holocaust - resisted what must have been the strong temptation to kill him, and instead gave him the kind of trial that he never permitted his victims.I've read a lot of Holocaust literature, and this is a worthy addition to the best of that genre.

Amazing story of the hunt for Eichmann and the serendipitous manner in which he was discovered in Argentina. Aside from the unique nature of his capture and removal to Israel is the determination of Ben Gurion to try Eichmann as a matter of a teaching experience for the world. Well worth reading together with another book, The Hunting of Eichmann.

At first, I just chose this book because I needed to read a non-fiction book for my class project, but after reading the first chapter, I was instantly hooked. I love how this book is mainly about events that occurred after World War II because I never learned too much about what happened post WWII.

I found it exciting, riveting and educational. I also feel that every person that learns more about the atrocities will help prevent something this horrible from happening again.

This book had my attention from start to finish. Were it not for work, I would've completed it in one sitting. Captivating and very informative. Above all, it has shed a very bright light on the horrors of post-war criminals who did not realize that the long arm of lady justice extends beyond the borders of Nazi Germany. I would recommend this book to anyone that has an understanding of the holocaust events. Even if you don't, this book will give the reader enough background information.

As someone who loves history I felt his very difficult subject was handled very well especially if sharing with younger readers such as middle or high school age kids. Well done!

I actually prefer this one to "the hundred headless woman". This one realize more on the narrative and less on the collage work to convey the story.

I give 5 stars for the book as the book itself is a masterpiece by the great Max Ernst. I only have one complaint, the book arrived in a bubble envelope and some pages where all bent and there is nothing I can do about it. Other than that, it's perfect.

Hector I also learned of this from David Sylvian. I bought a copy. Is a very interesting read and haunting.
