One of the best books I've ever read. Clearly shows that class is still an issue in the U.S. and shows how coalitions form. Also shows how problems have surfaced in the unions....especially interesting that unions did not band together to oppose Reagan's firing of the Air Traffic Controllers.Just a damn good book.Read it and you'll learn a lot!

This book is for leaders looking to improve their organization and it uses the military leaders ethic as its backbone. I am an army officer and commander and have been one for over 20 years, so this is right up my alley. Most of the information is on point, but it is so obvious it reads like an army manual. The mantra of "put your organization first, serve your subordinates, be thankful and humble, and be quick to give credit where credit is due, if you don't care who gets credit for good work then everyone wins" is hard to stretch out over 200 pages, and sometimes it seems that way. However, most of the book is right on and I would recommend it.

Sinek combines interesting perspectives from anthropology, biochemistry, history and business practice to weave together his narrative in support of his premise that great leadership is predicated upon behaviors of empathy and trust. Drawing on examples from the US military, medicine, business, finance and history, Sinek keeps the book engaging with stories and examples that bring his ideas to life, although I found he got repetitive and "preachy" from time to time.A memorable segment was Sinek's discussion of our biochemistry as human beings involving endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. His explanation of the ways these chemicals differentiate us from all other species provided insight into our success as human beings by driving cooperation and receiving neurochemical benefits from advancing the greater social good.Much of the book is not new, and Sinek tends to make broad generalizations that could easily be challenged. But as a conversation starter, the book is a refreshing addition to leadership literature and brings some new information and perspective to a discussion of leadership, while prompting consideration of broader issues of the values modern society embraces.

There are many books on Leadership that have little to say. Sinek's book has both new insights and an inspiring vision.Sinek begins with biology and outlines the roles of chemicals - specifically Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin - and how evolution has dictated why we generate them and how we respond to them. Endorphins mask pain and help give you a `runner's high' or the intense satisfaction after a tough work out.Dopamine leads to your `feeling good' upon accomplishing a goal whether that is bringing home dinner while evading sabre-toothed tigers or doing a bang-up job on a major presentation. Think of endorphins and Dopamine as the `individual achievement' chemicals. We need them to excel at what we do.Serotonin is what gives you a feeling of gratitude and affection for the persons who supported you in your endeavors and the good feeling as they applaud you. Oxytocin is `love' chemical. It gives you the warm fuzzies you get when you hug someone or have a deep meaningful conversation. Think of Serotonin and Oxytocin as the `social' chemicals.We, as humans, need both the individual achievement and social chemicals to progress. What has happened, unfortunately, in our society is that mores and values have changed to emphasize the former to such an extent that a deadly imbalance has been created. It is truly toxic - your job may be killing you. I used to think this was hyperbole but Sinek presents enough evidence for me to revise this opinion.Central to Sinek's arguments is the `Circle of Safety'. When a sabre-toothed tiger attacks a herd of buffalos they gather together with their tails touching and horns out. Whichever direction that tiger attacks, it is met with impenetrable defense. This is the circle of safety. We want to feel that there are persons we can trust who will look out for us. Where we can let our guard down and be ourselves.In such a trusting environment we can focus on doing the best we can and this greatly benefits both us, individually, the company. This feeling of `belonging' is what has disappeared from the corporate workplace to a large extent. It has been replaced by an ethos of `everyone for himself and the Devil take the hindmost'. And, sadly, even the `winners' in this environment are actually losers because of the personal price they pay in terms of insecurity and lack of meaningful relations, not to mention health side effects.What I found really useful in the book is the way in which Sinek takes concepts from fields such as psychology and shows how they are relevant to what we experience in the workplace. I found these to be penetrating insights and they lead to many `aha' moments as well as to a change in the way I conduct some of my own programs.For example, take the Milgram experiments. These are some of the best known - and most shocking - experiments in psychology and the implications are truly horrifying. In the early sixties, shortly after the Adolf Eichmann capture, trial and execution, there was a lively debate on whether Nazi collaborators were simply `following orders' or had a sense of responsibility and ownership for what they did.Yale professor Stanley Milgram devised a series of experiments in which a volunteer was asked to deliver electric shocks to a subject each time he made an `error' in a lesson. Unbeknownst to the volunteer the subject was actually a confederate of the professor and an actor who affected great pain and suffering as the level of electric shocks increased. In reality there were no shocks and no pain but the volunteer did not know this.When volunteers demurred from administering painful electric shocks the white gowned Milgram told them in various ways that they were required to continue even when they thought that the shocks they were administering were severely harmful to the subject.The shocking result was that huge numbers of `normal' persons - readily or with mild trepidation - continued to administer potentially lethal shocks to subjects even as they howled with pain and demanded that they be released from the experiment. And this happened simply because they were told to do so by an `authority figure' with no threats or rewards for doing so.Obviously this has great implications for why dictatorships form and survive and the debate on this continues to this day.What Sinek points out is that this same experiment is played out in our companies every day at huge human toll. I had never thought of it in these terms before but parallel is exact. Many `managers' willingly take actions that they know will bring hardship and suffering to others - mass layoffs, reductions in benefits, changes in working conditions etc. - simply because they have been directed to do so. Even worse, we have evolved a business `philosophy' where formal directions are no longer necessary - this is simply the way to do things.Sinek talks about how to bring the balance back in our workplace so both companies and individuals can thrive side by side in a symbiotic relationship. And he gives lots of examples such as the Barry Wehmiller companies where CEO Bob Chapman is dedicated to `building great people who do extraordinary things. And Charlie Kim, CEO of Next Jump who implemented a policy of lifetime employment.I particularly like his comparison of the results achieved by James Sinegal, CEO of Costco and Jack Welch the much touted former CEO of General Electric. Welch's paradigm of pitting executives against each other created a high stress environment and the gains were short-lived and unsustainable.In contrast Sinegal built a strong `circle of safety' for his people, paid wages which were nearly double those at Walmart and did many things to engender loyalty and trust. Costco employees are loyal and have built it into the second largest retailer in the country and the growth is both balanced and continuing.This book will make you think differently about the business systems that prevail in our society and also give you a way to make the workplace more humane.I hope you join the `Truly Human Leadership" bandwagon set rolling by Bob Chapman, CEO of the Barry Wehmiller companies. It is quite amazing.In Leaders Eat Last, Simon Sinek explores this unique ability to work together and how leaders make that happen. Sinek examines the chemicals that course through our veins; the ones that tell us we are happy, sad, angry or stressed. These emotions are the ones leaders must move with and against to create change.This is a great book. I assumed that the book would focus more on the concept of leaders humbling themselves and putting others first. Though that is a theme, it was not highlighted very brightly. A more accurate title would be the The Chemicals of Leadership.Sinek is a great author. He is interesting and easy to read. I would recommend this book.Here are a few great quotes:“Leadership is about taking responsibility for lives and not numbers.”“All we need are leaders to give us a good reason to commit ourselves to each other.”“Let us all be the leaders we wish we had.”

This is not your typical leadership book.. In fact, I don't think I've read a leadership book that was even remotely like it. I found it a bit odd to talk about the chemical composition of a person when it comes to leadership but I get it now. There are so many great tidbits and pearls of wisdom in the book and it's a relatively easy and quick read. One thing that was interesting was his comparisons of GE's leadership and Costco's leadership style, I'm not sure I buy into all the comparisons. All in all, it was a very good book and worth the read.

The title "The Civil War of 1812" is meant to emphasize how Loyalists and Patriots were everywhere among each other, fighting each other and sometimes brother against brother. Unlike most wars, the two sides were not in two places like the north/south Civil War of 1861-1865. I bought this book hoping to learn more about how the Loyalists were affected by, and participated in, this war. I had hoped to see more on the much smaller number of the earliest Loyalists who defected to Quebec. The author writes in his introduction that his aim is to tell us about the people on both sides of the border. In that he is successful. Other histories on this war emphasize the battles and the war itself. We need to know how the people fared during this war. Many just wanted to be left alone, not to be bothered by either side or conscripted into militias to fight. The extensive footnotes and bibliography show us that the author has done a very thorough job and gives us more sources to investigate. The many maps, portraits and scenes are helpful.I doubt anyone else could have done a better job with this particular focus on the war. To those reviewers who think he was unduly un-American in his style, we must remember the Loyalists held their convictions just as earnestly and honestly as the Patriots, and their side needs to be presented, too. Too much, the Loyalists were written out, or left out, of the American history because they were "traitors" and called "Tories," as somewhat pejorative term. And so, their history has not been presented. This book helps fill us in. Dense with detail, a second reading would be worthwhile to gain more information.

Alan Taylor seems to be a perennial finalist for the Pulitzer Prize thanks to his outstanding narrative works of historical research. This book seems in many ways to be a continuation of his 2006 work, The Divided Ground: Indians, Settlers, and the Northern Borderlands of the American Revolution. I was engrossed in this book from the beginning and it has further confirmed my belief that Taylor is one of America’s finest historians. The book is not about the entire War of 1812, but rather in keeping with Taylor’s focus on the events of an era on a relatively small area. In this case, The Civil War of 1812 focuses on the area of western New York and Upper Canada. Adjacent areas play a role in the book, but only as far as how events there impacted the region Taylor focused on. At first I didn’t realize what Taylor was doing, but it makes sense. Often a historical narrative focuses on a much broader topic and in the process dilutes the impact of an event in a given area. Taylor’s work narrows the area down which allows him to direct the focus of his research with a greater intensity. The result is a deep history which is often missing in historical fields. Taylor would follow up this work with his 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning narrative, The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832. The deeper research is challenging some long held historical assumptions about the War of 1812. I highly recommend this work to scholars of the period and to scholars who explore US history from the Revolution to the Civil War. I tell my students that the present is obviously shaped by the past, but in ways that few understand. When they understand why things today are the way they are, they have a greater understanding of the historical process and can use that understanding to help them make decisions about the future. Taylor’s microhistory is a great example of how historians can help people learn about the past beyond a cursory glimpse. The focus on Western New York and Upper Canada reveal the similarities and differences between the people who lived in that region during the war. His focus on how the war began and what took place afterward explain a great deal about why things occurred like they did. His claim that it was a civil war is validated throughout the book by the events that took place. The burning of homes and villages, the plundering and outright theft of possessions, and the switching of sides revealed the divisions created by the conflict. While other histories focus on the ineptitude of the American government during the conflict, Taylor’s work shows how that ineptitude created the inability of the Americans to sustain occupation of Canadian territory. This goes a long way to explain why the Americans failed to conquer Canada when by all rights they should have due to superior numbers between Americans and Canadians. Again, I highly recommend this book. I don’t think I can really say enough about it. I would have liked to have seen a bit more exploration on the naval events that took place on the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Erie, but the microhistory was not directed to those events. I feel this was something that in my opinion hurt the overall narrative. Other than that, the focus on Upper Canada and Western New York really brought out the personal nature of the war for the people in the region.

As an American who has lived and travelled throughout Canada, I found this book to be particularly interesting. It is well written and left quite an impression on me, particularly since one of my ancestors got a Darwin Award while trying to sink a British ship on Lake Erie from a row boat. I found the discussion about how the War of 1812 was crucial in the development of a national consciousness in both countries to be particularly compelling. It was also fascinating to read about how poorly conceived and managed much of the American war effort proved to be, and how the war was so interrelated with the international and national politics of the time. This was a really good historical read.

Abraham Silberschatz is the Sidney J. Weinberg Professor of Computer Science at Yale University. Prior to joining Yale, he was the Vice President of the Information Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories. Prior to that, he held a chaired professorship in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include database systems, operating systems, storage systems, and network management.Professor Silberschatz is a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), a Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. He received the 2002 IEEE Taylor L. Booth Education Award, the 1998 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, and the 1997 ACM SIGMOD Contribution Award. In recognition of his outstanding level of innovation and technical excellence, he was awarded the Bell Laboratories President's Award for three different Projects –– the QTM Project (1998), the DataBlitz Project (1999), and the NetInventory Project (2004).Professor Silberschatz' writings have appeared in numerous ACM and IEEE publications and other professional conferences and journals. I like reading this book. The authors did a pretty decent job taking a hard subject and writing about in a way I could understand, and organizing the sections in a way that builds your knowledge. My professor gave us a number of hard programming assignments in C that followed the book as well and reinforced that knowledge. So if you use this book within the right system, it can be very good. I don't think it would be easy for a beginner to just read however. You really need to dive into some of the things that you read about and get your hands dirty to gain the full value from this book. My graduate class was able to cover 6 chapters completely plus a spattering from a few other chapters in one semester. It was a very worthwhile class.

Very succinct book for early learners like myself (neophytes as my teacher calls us). There is the full linux kernel development book in its fifth edition, but that can be dense and frustrating for beginners. This Operating System Concepts Essentials has a great accompanying website with lots of great code examples and various resources that are very helpful.

Loving this book. Had to purchase for my Operating Systems Theory class. When I saw that the regular edition cost over 100 bucks I was ready to grit my teeth and just buy it. Then I heard about the Indian edition which was insanely cheaper so I bought it without a second thought. Shipping was fast and the book is high quality. Some people complain the pages are too thin and you can’t concentrate because the text bleeds through; while the paper is thinner, I am not distracted by the very light bleed that comes through. Maybe if you hold a single page up to the light and try to read them you’ll get distracted...As for content, this book is great. After finishing a particularly long chapter, I found myself continuing to read simply because I was feeling more curious about what the author would talk about next.This edition is great!

Had to get this book for a class. The most confusing book I have every read, typos and you will need to read over the chapters twice to get what it being said. Best to use the Powerpoint on the linked site to get the summary of each chapter or just go to the summary within the chapter. I know they author's tried well to break down the subject but it seemed at times that it was too much filler and not just enough for what need to be explained.

This is a very well written book on operating system design, multiprogramming, threads and all the great things that go on inside your computer while it runs an operating system. It requires some prerequisite knowledge of computer hardware and some programming. As other reviewers have stated, it is not a freshman level book. It is however, an excellent guide for people studying software design.It seems to be lacking in some areas, the section on semaphores was probably the worst area of the book. I had to turn to Tanenbaum's works for better information. Overall though, worthy of four stars.Unfortunately, I have to add to my review that I am deeply disappointed in the direction the publisher has taken with respect to the text. I find it distasteful that publishers have gone from printing student solutions manuals to requiring access to a web site. Fortunately, the editions have not changed that much and the questions are still available in solutions manuals of prior editions or perhaps if you are lucky, someone has a PDF of them. Likewise, leading search engines can provide sources for researching the solution to see if your answer is correct.

This book was the required reading for one of my college programming courses. The authors go in to good details about the specifics of all subjects relating to operating systems in general. Some that were notable were the use and creation of semaphore objects, threading, CPU scheduling, and disk scheduling algorithms. The semaphores and threading were particularly useful in completing the classic synchronization problem 'The Dining Philosophers' which was one of the assignments for the course. The breakdown of disk organization was another very beneficial and highly interesting topic. The book covers MAC OS, Linux, Unix, Windows, as well as some information about older systems such as DOS and CP/M. The book has generalized examples and each topic includes a good deal of theory. I do not recommend this book for people without a solid foundation of C or C++. It helps to know Assembly as well, but not necessary.

This book has been around for many editions. I really enjoyed reading it. The author has good explanations with plenty of examples.

Excellent new book! The price is much cheaper, compared to the hardcover version, but the content is the same.
