What a nice surprise this was. A funny, noirish beginning turns gradually more supernatural, in a believable and chilling way. This writer has a wonderful gift for dialogue, setting the scene for frights and more. She just has a lot of gifts. I loved this, I hope she writes more. Highly recommended!
I didn't realize that this was a horror story until I was part way through it. I do like a well-done horror story (Stephen King is one of my all-time favorite authors), but I don't feel that this was well done. In many respects, the horror aspects were overdone...as a reader, I felt hit over the head with them, including the incessant mentions of "chittering" in the bathroom and walls. But my main issue is that there is no "good guy" in the story. I could not like the main character no matter how hard I tried. I just wasn't able to care about him or what happened to him; he was a liar and a jerk, and the bad guys could have him for all I cared. Secondly, once I was well into the story I realized it was a actually knock-off of King's 1983 story "Pet Sematary." That really irritated me. Get your own ideas, Ms. Tudor!
This story is about a village in Great Britain and depicts the problems with growing up outside . This author was able to graphically describe events, people and places that impacts lives until their deaths. Trauma is not trauma until it is recognized and understood. This is not recommended for the young or those sensitive to confined spaces. The main character lives in confined spaces. Good recommendation by Amazon and the NYer.
This book was very much like Chalk Man in the setting and characters but very different as far as being a satisfying read - too many unanswered questions. And the fact that it was so repetitive in setting and characters took away from the story - a high school and cemetery were redundant.
Finished in 2 days darn reality keeps getting in the way. I absolutely love the narrator chosen for this book. Looking forward to reading more from C J Tudor. So much of this book as a resounding affect on me. Stopped me in tracks on more than one occasion.
I came across CJ Tudor through Stephen Kings website. Either him or some on the site recommended her debut novel Chalkman. This latest book is equally as good as Chalkman and in some ways a lot better. Tudor has tightened up her story and improved her prose. Her descriptive language transports the reader to the small village where the novel is set and her shifting timeframes (a major plot device of this novel) are seamless. My only complaint is that the main character smoked throughout the book---I quit 3 years ago and it made me want to smoke again--I didn't cave :-). I don't want to put any spoilers in the ethos so you will have to trust me that this is a must read.
Very well written. I read the Chalk Man a few months ago and was glad she wrote another book. I've had to learn the meanings of a few "English" words but that's what makes it fun and interesting.
Got here super fast, looking forward to reading it because it looks AWESOME. It is possible I buy too many books. I’m not sorry.
