A Mortal Song was super fun and cute! When it starts, it's Sora's 17th birthday and she's about to ask her royal kami parents to let train for her duties. Sora has always worried that there's something wrong with her, since she has strong ki, but her parents never gave her any responsibilities. Then her home, Mt. Fuji, is attacked by a swarm of ghosts led by a demon. Sora manages to escape and her guard leads her to a sage who knows of a prophecy. Apparently, Sora isn't a kami, she's just human and it's not up to her to save her family and friends.I really enjoyed A Mortal Song. I loved the world that the author created on Mt. Fuji and how she used Japanese mythology. The kami live among humans, but unseen. Most of them stay on Mt. Fuji, keeping the volcano dormant and controlling the weather, amongst other things. Sora also has a dragonfly companion who provides her with power, since she has none of her own. It was also interesting to me how the yakuza played a large role in the plot! I wasn't expecting that! What kept me from loving A Mortal Song was that it felt quite juvenile and simple at times. Characters would learn something new and then repeat it back, or they'd realize something and explain everything leading up to that point. There was also a twist, that wasn't really a twist, because I think one of the characters had made it pretty obvious and yet everyone else was shocked when it was revealed. The big showdown at the end between Sora and Company and the demon was very underwhelming. I had this moment of "Seriously?! That's it?!" It was so simple and boring. The ending twist on the prophecy was also quite cheesy, but at least that made me smile. In the end, A Mortal Song was a fun story. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, and liked watching Sora stay strong despite her learning that she's just an ordinary human. She didn't let that stop her from saving her home and her family!

Sora is a kami princess just turned 17 and ready to take on her responsibility with the mountain and the rest of the kami. There's only one problem. She's human. After a surprise attack and a narrow escape, Sora and her companions, Takeo and Midori, race to Tokyo to find the real kami princess to save the mountain, her parents, and gain her place among the kami. This story was beautiful! My heart hurt for Sora when her life was turned upside down and it lifted with hers too. It was a nice breath of fresh air to follow a main character who wasn't the chosen one, even when it was offered to her to take up the place when it looked dire. Sora found many different weapons to use against the antagonist that any person would be able to do. I enjoyed watching how brave she and Keiji were and how they looked out for each other in a throng of supernatural. I really loved Sora's decision in the end.I only found one mistake when out should have been our. I would have liked to have seen something done with Midori in Sage Rin's house, but that is my only minor complaint. This was fun and easy to read that kept me and my emotions engaged in the story and the characters. I did not want to put it down. I recommend reading this book. I will be reading it again.

I don't seem to find books often that I truly love and deserve a complete five-star rating but A Mortal Song is one of those books for this year. I received A Mortal Song for review by Another World Press (Thank-you!) and I was instantly in love with the cover. I love reading books set in Asia and especially Japan so I knew I had to make it my priority. When you read the blurb for this book you get a big spoiler to the plot but it's a large part of what would attract you to the story. The main character has the excellent and magical life and then at the start of this book it's all torn away from her and she's no longer the person she thought she was. Sora also goes from being someone very special, so powerful and destined to rule, to a nobody that is powerless and was given up by her real parents in favour of the princess everyone wished to protect.I loved this story and I read it with a passion for the characters, the setting and the detail. I was immersed from the very first page and the ending left me feeling complete and in that blissful state, you have after finishing an excellent book. I can't think of anything I didn't like about it, and I'm really trying but I'm happy to not find anything to criticise.[...]

Love, love, love this book!Sora is a Kami, one of the spiritual beings (able to turn solid or invisible and able to manipulate ki energy) living on Mt. Fuji, or so she thought. On her 17th birthday, there's an attack on the mountain, which sends Sora and her bodyguard, Takeo, fleeing to find a way to save the Kami. Their quest takes them to Tokyo, and reveals a long-kept secret: Sora is not Kami. She was traded at birth to keep the true Kami princess safe, meaning she has an emotional struggle as she meets the girl who will take her place and save the world, and the parents who gave her up for this to happen. The danger looms ever stronger as the days approach Obon, and the ghosts and demons who took over the mountain come closer to their insidious goal. There is almost non-stop adventure, an adorable and heart-wrenching romance, and heart-stopping danger around every corner. The fantasy elements in this are gorgeous. The only complaint I have about the book is that it had an end, but the story still lives on in my mind. This one is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to anyone looking for an engaging, thrilling, beautiful, un-put-downable book!
