Laura Hillman (nee Hannelore Wolff) was born in 1923 in Aurich, Germany, near the North Sea. She was the third of five children born to Karoline and Martin Wolff. What a miracle that the author and her future husband both survived the Holocaust. This story helped me release a lot of pent-up emotions, and I pray with all my heart for world peace and for all the current genocides going on in the world to be revealed for what they are. I pray that the Naziism still very active in the world will be overcome, and that people of all faith's will have compassion on their fellow-man. I pray that the love of God will rule men's hearts, and that forces of greed, hate, power-hunger and corruption will be exposed... and healed

This is a heartbreaking story of a young woman whose inner strength kept her going despite unfathomable cruelty at the hands of the Nazis. I am always awed by these survival stories, the determination of the people to live and the events that only the hand of God could orchestrate. I would like to have read more, tho, of the circumstances the character experienced from the moment of hearing she was free to how she re-entered civilian life and how she overcame those obstacles along with the thousands of others trying to start over after their dreadful internment.

My issue with this book is that the main character never goes in depth. I understand how traumatizing it must be to relive such horror. For example when her dad was murdered you can fell her sorrow but, for the most part she doesn't really delve into her emotions, and that's where I had an issue. If you've ever read "Night" by Elie Wiesel or the "Diary OF Anne Frank", for example it feels like you are there going through the same turn of events as they are. This book I don't know how to describe it other than anticlimactic.

This memoir of how a young girl endured and survived the Holocaust horrors was originally chosen for my 15-year-old granddaughter who has begun asking questions about the breakdowns of humanity. When the book arrived, I read it in one evening before passing it on to her. The book is a well written, tear-jerking love story. I believe survival of the prisoners in the labor and concentration camps is nothing less than a miracle. This is an excellent book, especially as an introduction and explanation of the suffering of those times to the young people of today. I look forward to discussing the book with my granddaughter when she finishes reading it.

sad, intense, but necessary for this generation to know about the Holocaust

The author captures the many difficulties Jews and others experienced at the hands of Germans under the influence of evil Hitler. She was so courageous. I'd like my 17 year old granddaughter to read it, so she can learn what bad people are capable of doing.

Excellent book, just as many others I have read on the subject of Holocaust. Very touching and painful yet true and eye-opening. Recommend for any serious reader who wants to be enlightened about the suffering of Jewish people during WWII.

What a fascinating, resourceful woman. Good for teens and above. Would highly recommend.

I bought this book many years ago when Dr. Crook wrote the first edition around 1986. At that time many of the prescriptions for Candida Yeast infections were not available in the US or not invented yet. I recall doing well based on the advice of the book then, but the diet was very difficult to follow. The latest version with updated revisions, includes meal menu items, foods you must avoid at all costs, and ways to test for food allergies that work. I've followed the diet for 8 days thus far and have not only lost 10 lbs, but feel better overall. I haven't obtained a prescription yet from my doctor to kill the yeast, but just the diet alone is helping. I'm sleeping better, up less often during the night, no more itching issues in those places us men aren't supposed to scratch in public. I've learned foods, fruits, and condiments I thought were healthy and good for us, are a major cause aggravating Yeast infection issues. Mine started again along with massive weight gain while starving myself, after a long stay in the VA Hospital and pumped with strong antibiotics via IV's and pills. I lost 67 lbs while sick and started feeling better, but put on 80 lbs in 12 months time due to the yeast issues caused by the antibiotics. No amount of dieting with fresh vegetables, yogurts, fresh fruits, 2% milk even, stopped the weight gain. Literally starving myself still caused weight gains. The book reminded me of the mold and sugars in foods that are okay for people without the yeast problems, can eat without worry. I knew from past experience this diet works, and for me I hope it allows me to avoid Bypass surgery as my last resort option (especially with VA doctors that aren't as professional as private doctors). I highly recommend this book, even if you don't think you have a Yeast infection problem There are simple tests and questions inside designed to help you determine if Yeast is causing your problems in health and/or weight. I am now ordering his Yeast Connection Cookbook. This should be a good companion book if you are considering this one. That (meals I could make) in the past was the difficult part, learning what I could actually have to eat or drink. By the way, I am eating until full, only some cravings that I can now better control, and best of all.....finally losing weight. This will teach you many things about the foods we love that are literally killing us. It is worth the effort and will be not only a life time and lifestyle change, but will make you feel 100% for the first time in years. I've learned to like foods I never would have tried before in my life, even my old cat is healthier and wants the asparagus spears and broccoli I cook in my own herbs grown on the patio.****Update****I started this Yeast Connection Diet on 9/5/2013 and as of 11/1/2013, I have lost 32 lbs so far. This is without any added medications. Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, and Prostate issues have all improved. Overall health and energy level is dramatically improved, plus I have discovered food allergies I never knew about. Most of the recipes are good, some need improvement. The key is, avoid ALL processed foods, including sauces like A1, Mustard, Mayonnaise, etc. You can make your own from scratch knowing exactly what goes into it. As all diets, doing without sugar, salt, etc. is more expensive (my food bill doubled), but this one is well worth it for the benefits for me thus far. As much as I once loved Coca Cola, Domino's Pizza's, fried anything, sweets, etc. Nearly all the foods with sugar or salt added, I can't stand the taste of anymore. Even Kraft American Cheese slices I loved once, are too salty for me now. It is a very time consuming and strict diet, but being retired I have more time for the shopping and preparation now. If you have a busy life, make up your meals and ingredients for a week or so in advance. Make sure to refrigerate or freeze them since they will not have any preservatives (unless you like green or black mold). As you get practice with making condiments and meal items, it gets easier and faster with practice.For those of you struggling with Yo-Yo diets, or like me, put on weight while counting calories living on 700 per day, weighting portions, counting carbs, etc. that didn't work, and worse, put on the weight anyway. I haven't counted a single calorie or weighed portions since starting this diet. For me it was a waste of time and just didn't work. Things I thought were healthy, were compounding the problem and adding on the weight. This is a lifestyle change, to the point of becoming religious in the proper foods, preparation, and changes you must be committed to. For me seeing positive results and averaging 2 lbs per day lost is what keeps me focused. Yes, I have cheated, then find out one meal of the wrong foods not only causing immediate health issues to return, but sometimes as much as 10 lbs gained overnight after taking two weeks to lose the same amount. As you get more used to eating properly, as I said above, the bad foods will not longer taste as good, or your body will let you know real quick not to eat certain foods you gave up.I have been consulting with my doctor, and by giving up dairy products, I take vitamin D, Calcium, and other supplements since blood and urine tests showed they dropped. I could literally drink a gallon of milk per day, but found out even 2% milk is loaded with sugar and salt. So thinking fat free milk and the creamer in my coffee was okay, proved to be wrong for me. Any hidden sugars will restrict the weight loss, salt can boost blood pressure. So I can't stress how important reading labels on every food item you buy is very important.

If you want to understand what a yeast/fungal/Candida infection is, then this is the definitive book on it. It includes the diet you need to be on to get rid of it, and tons of relevant information. Everyone should read this book so you can identify it in others. Pretty much, 90% of the population has Candida, and it causes a host of our diseases, but doctors never talk about it or admit that this condition is so debilitating or pervasive. Must be denial on purpose. Please read this. I wish I had found it years before I did.

This is my second copy. Loved this book when I read it many years ago. I had loaned it to someone and didn't get it back, so bought myself another copy. Good book! The first time I had read it, a coworker passed her copy around the office. There must have been at least 4 or 5 of us that read it and each bought our own copy after reading hers.

This is a fantastic book, extremely informative. If you even think you may have a yeast problem, you've got to read this book. I learned a lot, will be referring to it often.

This book was amazing. It offered a possibility as to what was causing my husband's Meniere's. He was preparing to have surgery to control the symptoms and then we read the book. It has only been a couple of months since he has been treated and it has changed our lives I'm not saying it will work with everyone but if you or someone you love is experiencing these type of issues it is worth a read.

All the information in here is from 1986 or before except I did notice one from I think 1992. It appears the authors 1st edition is first in the book and rather than revise and update the information the author just added the same information a second time. So as you read the book you get the same information 6+ times.This should be basic knowledge now with more advanced testing and treatments. If your medical doctor doesn't know it look for a Naturopathic Doctor as they will know all about this and have dozens of dietary, homeopathic, and botanical treatments. I like the topic and think that it was likely an excellent book in the mid 80's. I hope they reorganize the book to eliminate reputation and update the information.I would recommend getting the The Candida Cure: Yeast, Fungus & Your Health - The 90-Day Program to Beat Candida & Restore Vibrant Health but I would caution that it appears she receives money from the company and supplements she recommends. You can also find the same details and protocols from the top couple search results "Candida diet protocol" in Google.

This book goes above and beyond what one needs to know to treat candida. It has a checklist of symptoms that gives the reader validation to what they are experiencing as one who has systemic yeast infection. The book addresses diet and lifestyle changes that are necessary to heal the body of the overgrowth of bad bacteria. It suggest test one can ask for at doctor visits that could possibly indicate a systemic condition with yeast. I recommend this book, it has already proven to be a life saver; I feel better already.

Their framework of the three cultures is extremely useful here and jives so well with what I have seen and experienced. Here in Montreal, I have seen, from the point of observation of a central character (as their Trojan Horse), how these activists – very skilful populist demagogues – have managed to move this activism out from the campus and directly into the community through the use of social media. This has been going on since around 1990 and, by now, reaches an incredibly large audience in the city, especially among students from the city’s four universities – obviously their main target. This is an alarming turn of events in my opinion. Politically, I am left of centre and I am profoundly disturbed by the degree to which the mainstream left here in Montreal has been so easily seduced by the extreme left. They very much need to read this book. Thank you so much to both authors for providing readers with such clarity on this new social environment.

This is a outstanding analysis of victimhood culture by two sociologists. It shows how even the victims themselves are harmed by promoting this hypersensitive / always looking for offense or harm environment. Of course it is primarily centered in nations campuses but it is spreading to the wider culture.This is an incredibiy rigorous and fair critic of this alarming trend and I definitely recommend it to everyone.

This book is solid but uninspiring. If you want to know the issues, the book is good. For some deep analysis of the issues, the book is quite weak. Why has the left in the US turned to identity politics and left-fascism? What is wrong with the strategy of shaming members of privileged groups and rejecting free speech and civil discourse? No answers here.I have nothing but systematic contempt for this new strategy on the Left. As a young member of the Left I fought against the Vietnam war, against racial and sexual discrimination, and for tolerance of diversity. We won LOTS of battles. The new authoritarian Left thinks it can move forward by shaming privileged groups into relinquishing their achieved positions. What a sick joke! The authoritarian Left is too pathetic for words.I am a scientist and an intellectual. I am proud of the contributions my generation of progressives made towards an emancipatory ethic and vision. The current authoritarian Left is completely intellectually bankrupt. There is not a single book or article that has any intellectual cogency. Just a bunch of dirty, racist bigots huddling together for warmth.What has brought this situation about? Frankly, I am still searching for answers.

Campbell and Manning advance the fascinating and provocative thesis that the tantrum behavior we're seeing on today's college campuses reflects transition from a dignity culture to a self-obsessed victimhood culture.

Someone had to say it. This is part of a growing literature that is deconstructing the extreme left that has essentially taken over much of higher education. I'd say it was a painful but necessary read for me, having gone to graduate school in my 60's and having been on the left for about half of my life.

...a scholarly look into society rather than a collection of judgments. A worthwhile read for those interested in thinking through complex issues rather than the (unfortunately) easier “just tell me what to think .”

This book did something in every chapter without fail--it made me stop reading, look up, and go, "So *thaaaat's* what that's called!" The authors have absolutely nailed what's going on in our culture and given a huge range of today's societal ills accurate, thoughtful, nuanced-but-still-clear-and-direct language. Reading this book, I understood why so many things that seem to start in a good place--a helpful, compassionate place--still give me a bit of a queasy feeling and fear of how it's all going to turn out. Our culture is changing in undeniable ways. Things that would have made our parents and grandparents blush with shame are now the first line of defense for today's young adults. Why? Ordinary struggles of life are now regarded as life-or-death traumas from which people old enough to vote, enlist, or marry require institutional protection. The authors are both college professors, but they write in exactly the way all college professors should--for a thoughtful audience that can handle their ideas but doesn't necessarily have their academic vocabulary. I highly recommend this book.

This book is written well, seemingly more for an academic audience, but is still a very thorough and in-depth review of much of the issue we face on college campuses. Should be read by all!

This review is on the kindle edition.I am not very far into this book and really love it. The author has done an amazing job that has truly touched my heart. Since I deal with chronic illness I needed something like this to uplift my heart. And it delivers all that so far.HOWEVER, very early in the book there is a serious flaw. Once again, I am finding a book that has had very poor editing for the kindle. This book deserves better than that. Thankfully I paid only $3 for it. I hope I won't find anymore of these "editing" errors in the rest of the book.

I completed the reading today, underlining many sentences, thrilling to Rob Morgan's insights and memories as a Pastor, world traveller, family man, author, sheep owner and soul-searcher. I savored more truths from my favorite Psalm than I ever thought possible. Rob Morgan's research is broad and the message is clear as verse by verse is examined in depth and made relevant to us living busy anxious lives in today's unsettled world.This is THE book to give or share with everyone you know that is open to receiving knowledge of how to achieve peace and inspiration from a reading journey thru Psalm 23. Who would have thought this famous Psalm about the shepherd (God) leading His sheep (us)could be woven into a 191 page book filled with timeless truths, interesting facts about sheep (and even sheep dogs) and shepherds in various parts of the world. Personal stories add to the richness of this message of comfort. Yes, others have written their own thoughts on Psalm 23 over the years, however, this lively book is the best, especially for today's audience. A lady at our Church had given me her book to read, but I ordered this one, because it is so good. My husband has Dementia with Lewy Bodies, and this is one I know I will read many times. It makes me thankful that I love my Lord, and that He loves and cares for me! A wonderful book for anyone that is facing some of life's trials.

This is such a lovely book. I read a copy from my library, and purchased it as a gift for my grandson. What words of comfort it contains, and explains in detail Psalm 23. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

I wanted to give this 5 stars because I received this book just as promised. The reason I can't give 5 is the LARGE print. I am in a bible study and my pages don't align with everyone else pages so when we are having a discussion I can't find where they are. You need to advertise this as a Large Print Version. If I had known I wouldn't have purchased it.

David Jeremiah promoted this book on Turning Point; so I bought one, read it, meditated on it, and put in on my favorite book of the year list! I'm reading it again right now. Also, I'm on my way to buying a dozen more to give out to my friends and family and telling them that this book is Soul Food! Heaven knows that we live in times, and we are all going through trials that give us a desperate need for that Food to Feed our Souls! It's a very uplifting book!

Wish I were more articulate. But not to worry! Each book in thus series is written by some one who is able to put thoughts into words. And he dies it very well. I live the details about the characters. You don't get bogged down, but rather buoyed up, because it's pretty darn funny. Lots of digressions, but always returns to the task at hand, making the journey all the more interesting. I get caught up in his style as much as the story and the humor. What a great series. Do hope it goes on after the fourth part.

Book two of a four part trilogy? Right away this clued me in that the author might be a little bent. The Day That Never Comes continues with the majority of the characters introduced in A Man with One of Those Faces, the lead off to a refreshing series by a gifted recently arrived writer in the field. We have our leads,Bunny-a hard bitten Irish cop with a strong sense of what is right and little compunction on how he achieves it, Paul-socially challenged, intelligent, good hearted and looking for something to wrap his life around and our third lead, Brigit-strong willed, alpha female, brilliant, but doesn't always think things through before acting. The three of them have recently formed a private investigation agency just before Bunny disappeared while Dublin threatens to melt down due to civil unrest. One of the author's strengths is blending serious fiction with humor without turning the whole affair into slapstick. Bad things happen to good people, there is some violence, and the endings aren't necessarily standard happily ever after but the tension along the way is relieved by frequent doses of belly laugh humor that had still had me occasionally smiling and chuckling hours later when doing something else entirely The plot is ordinary, its the characters and their interactions that steal the show. Add in a strong supporting cast of well drawn secondary characters and bad girls/guys and you have a read that sets a high bar for satisfying entertainment. I read a lot of reviews and wade through a lot of Kindle sample downloads lookin for good entertainment and when I stumble on the rare jewel like this all the effort is worth it.Note:One of those 'well drawn secondary characters', Maggie is newly introduced in this book and turns out to be one of the stars. Maggie is an attack trained dog previously under order of death by the Irish police due to an unfortunate incident involving drugs and impulse control. Details of Maggies' sordid past are available in the book, How To Send A Message, free at the author's website- whitehairedirishman.com -sorry Amazon won't let me leave an outside link, you'll actually have to type it in by hand(go ahead, type it in and live like an animal). Most author freebies tend to be early work and I have rarely found them worth the time to read, where How To Send A Message seems to me to be as well written as the rest of McDonnell's Dublin Trilogy entries. The other stories included were more than 'just readable' as well, especially one about a small, select group of Catholic nuns formed to secretly intervene in other counties affairs. Horah!

At least McDonnell didn't kill off Bunny McGarry, who I missed throughout the story. He finally turned up at the end. But he did give us Maggie--I loved Maggie!--and that almost made up for very little Bunny. This was an interesting mix of bad guys and a political tutorial. MCDonnell peoples his story with really quirky characters. In addition to being quirky, at least two of them are mensches. You have to love his main characters, but many of his supporting cast are interesting characters in their own right. Like the police chief who's into expensive shoes. Nor did I find this as funny as the first one even though there were still some very good lines that brought a smile. Regardless, I am a fan and hope that McDonnell continues to write interesting, funny, absorbing stories.

I've read A Man With One of Those Faces and I'm already on to Angels In the Moonlight. I enjoy the individual voices of his characters, they evoke a real world feeling. I'd like to know some of his characters. I'm of two minds about his books though. I'd love to see a movie, or better yet a tv series developed with these characters...but I also want to selfishly keep them to myself. I hope you enjoy this book, I did, but don't tell anyone else about them.

this guy needs to get writing faster because I cannot wait for his next book! I love the main character, and all the other characters too for that matter. It's so funny yet has this great plot at the heart of it. I really want to go to Ireland just to hear the dialect now.

Another Home Run for Caimh (or whatever the equivalent is in hurling)! I thoroughly enjoyed his first novel and liked this one is even better. The addition of Maggie, the German Shepherd that has a similar personality to Bunny McGarry, has definitely strengthened this crime-fighting team. Looking forward to Book 3 (write faster, you Irish hack)!

Loved it. I read the 1st of the trilogy and couldn't wait until, The Day That Never Comes, well, came. It continues the characters, witty dialogue, and Irish charm of "A Man With One Of Those Faces." I recommend it highly! McDonnell said there would be a 3rd, and I'm awaiting that one now. It's all great craic. Hope that McDonnell let's his fans know when he comes to the US. I'd love to hear his stand up in person!

This is a most refreshing book. It seems to me that the crime genre from the British isles of late is so Very dark, grim and exceedingly gruesome. The work of Mr. McDonnell is indeed a work of crime fiction but the humor levens it and at the conclusion you are not looking to shoot yourself in the foot to have a real reason to explain the pain you feel.

I recently took several chocolate making classes from Chef Marco Ropke, head pastry chef at the Beijing Ritz Carlton during the 2008 Olympics, and in class, he basically suggested that if we were to buy any one chocolate book, THIS book was it.Why? It's a comprehensive 4 in 1 book:1) The science behind chocolate, sugarwork and the various components. Why might you want to include glucose in your chocolate and not just any sugar syrup? What is the difference between using agar-agar, gelatin, pectin and cornstarch in making gummies and jellies? This type of information helped me better understand why some of the steps to chocolate making mattered, and also gave me more comfort in knowing where I could deviate from recipes (e.g. I can add whatever liquid flavourings I want so long as I add them at the right time and keep my fats to liquid ratio consistent).2) Techniques - how do you temper chocolate? how do you make aero-bar style chocolates? what's the proper way to handle ganaches or molded chocolates? how do you make a praline or marzipan? what's the secret to those meltaway type chocolates? what about the honeycomb material inside crunchie bars?3) Troubleshooting - invariably a chocolate recipe will go wrong. how do you save a ganache that's been separated? why did your pates de fruit sweat and what can you do about it?4) LOADS of really delicious recipes from chai tigers to a thai lemongrass truffle or toucan passionfruit chocolate to marshmallows, nougats, chocolate bars, candy crisps, caramels, fudges and more. I made several recipes (scaled down since the recipes are for ~180 truffles each!) from the book and they have all been hits. I have ordered more chocolate and I can't wait to try more.The book also included suggested equipment and a brief explanation of some of the tools and why they were important.The one thing missing from the book that I wish they spent time on was decorating in general -- the different techniques for finishing chocolates such as adding chocolate swirls, etc. To be fair each recipe has a description for how to finish the chocolate such as adding bits of salt or adding candied fruit bits and they did show you how to make spiked chocolates, but I wanted to know more about selecting colours and other types of chocolate flourishes.In all it's a pricey, but valuable book that I anticipate I will be referencing a lot as I continue to learn and make chocolates.

This is the second time I've purchased this book. I used it and others to build my business and have won many awards based on technique I learned from this book. It is a great book to learn the basics and build from there. My first book is full of chocolate and sugar and in pretty poor shape.... so yes, to put it simply, it is a great book. Hopefully, the second book will see the same love! I've included a small sample of my work.

This was an amazing cookbook. I don't say that lightly. I was genuinely and delightfully surprised that I really want to & will make ALL the recipes in this book in the coming months/years. Usually in cookbooks there are a great many recipes you pass over and don't want to make - you buy the book for the few that you do like. This book is the exception. It exceeded my expectations in recipes and instruction. This is a intermediate or advanced cookbook, but easy to follow. The pictures are beautiful. The photos help you see what the end product will look like.This cookbook is also a great reference with charts, photos, trouble shooting, and step by step technique. This is easily in the top 5 cookbooks I own. I would recommend to anyone wanting to know how to make confections like: homemade marshmallows (not as easy as you would think but DEFINITELY worth the effort), gourmet lollipops in every flavor you can come up with, jellied childhood favorites, to every kind of chocolate delight you will find in a chocolaterie. Highly recommend. I will be looking for more books by this author.

Amazing. The first 100+ pages are pretty heavy in chemistry, but if you can make your way through it then you’re practical understanding and confidence in chocolate making will be through the roof. Note: I’m an avid home cook and have never been able to successfully temper chocolate prior to reading this. I’ve only tried two recipes (but used all three methods of tempering successfully), one I followed exactly and it was SO PERFECTLY balanced (chocolate, caramel, pumpkin and spices). The second one I adapted and while I’m actually just partially through it it’s been very easy to follow and even troubleshoot stress free because of all the additional knowledge you get pre-recipes. I’ve done truffles (setting now) and molded chocolates. After my first recipe my confidence in my understanding and ability to work with chocolate is super high. Though I was super nervous prior to completing it also because of all the chemistry, but don’t worry, it’s totally attainable!
